What is the best way to remove duct tape residue?

Asked by kenmc (11783points) September 21st, 2011

I have a window on my car that doesn’t work. I’ve been using duct tape to keep it from falling down but this seems to no longer work as well as it used to. I’m thinking its because of the tape residue left over after every time I replace it. Dust and leaves have gotten themselves stuck up on it and are causing a lack of stick-to-it-ivness and with winter coming, that won’t be friendly.

Detachol

(We use it for stubborn IV catheter tape – it works wonders.)

Something called GooGone- something like that.

Goo gone, which is basically 50% mineral oil, 50% gasoline.

Lighter fluid works well too.

Well, I’m thinking the Goo Gone because it looks like ⅓ the price of the Detachol. At least on Amazon.

Thanks guys!

@kenmc ou can go to a smoke shop and get lighter fluid for like, 10 bucks, no shipping or anything.

Plain old rubbing alcohol will work like a charm.

@XOIIO Just placed an order for the goo gone stuff for 5.25$ with no shipping cost.

@SpatzieLover I tried it with no avail.

You could try vitamin E oil. I remember using it to get sticker residue off something and it worked great. I bought the oil for less than $4 at Kroger (store brand). If it doesn’t work for the tape residue, you will have it on hand for any future sunburn you may get. =)

@jonsblond I’ll pick some up. Thanks!

I spread some cream on it, wait for it to dry sock in a bit, then rub it off?
It worked for me.

@kenmc If alcohol doesn’t work, then plain old mineral oil will. I always keep a bottle on hand to remove price tags from items I buy. Elbow grease with either of the two products, also helps.

A container of Naphtha. It is the same a lighter fluid but cost ¼ the price and will last you until the rest of your life.

Warm with hair dryer and then use nail polish remover (regular, not for acrylic). I had the same issue on my car window.

I would use a toothbrush and toothpaste.

I have a can of 3M Adhesive Remover in my office that is amazing stuff. You can get it where office supplies are sold, and it’s cheap.

WD40 works well and it’s cheap and easy to find.
