What's current for "don't know squat?"?

Asked by 6rant6 (13710points) September 21st, 2011

Writing. I’ve got a Goth-girl character who says something that means, “I don’t know anything about that but…” but I want it to be more up-to-date. Ideas?

@blueiiznh IDK is just an acronym for I Don’t Know. It doesn’t deal with the rest of the phrase.

I think don’t know shit (or dunno shit) might be the best. Or no fucking clue. But I don’t think “don’t know squat” has really changed into having a new colloquialism. Squat isn’t used so much anymore, but a new one hasn’t really come up to take it’s place. It seems more likely she’d just say “I don’t know anything about x, but…”, perhaps inserting some cuss words.

I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say “I don’t know squat” in a very long time. I’m a middle-aged non-goth but I’m a fan of the tried and true classics like “I don’t know shit” or “I have no clue” or “no fucking clue” depending on my mood and my company. I think the most important thing is that whatever comes out of your character’s mouth sounds like something she would say. Unless it’s absolutely essential to the story or the character that she be absolutely current on Gothspeak or Goth slang, whatever that might be, I wouldn’t force it. Or, you could walk up to the next sullen, distant Goth girl you encounter and ask her.

Maybe just “clueless”. As in “I’m clueless (about)”

@Aethelflaed I am very aware of what IDK means and that is why i added the link in case others did not. While i appreciate your feedback, we hardly know the exact context for it’s use. So we really don’t know the “rest of the phrase”. We don’t know the situation enough to simply go off adding profanity.

@6rant6 Given more information on the emotion or situation would be helpful so we can try to carry it in a more current retort. Can you give us a sentence or two?

I would think a simple shrug would be Goth-like. It really does all depend on the storyline, the emotional state in which your character is in and the character herself. As @lillycoyote stated the phrase itself hasn’t really been altered much. “Don’t know squat” is a colloquialism in itself, imo ; ) “no idea” or “how would I know?” or “how the fuck would I know?! do I look like fuckin Einstein?? (or) Brit-fuckin-tanica?”
I think if younger kids don’t know something will pull a Socrates (unaware of it though). It helps to take the focus off them. It all depends on the situation.

“What do I know? I vote the straight Democratic ticket. Or would, if I could be bothered to vote. Or to register.”

The character is the alpha dog in the scene. She says, “Chet’s dog died.” Another (weaker) says, no his mother died. She responds, “__I don’t know anything about__ his mother, but I do know…”

I always say “I don’t know jack shit.” or “Fuck if I know.”

These are all guy answers. A girl would say something like… well I dont know really…. hmm. My sister is a goth, I will ask her.

@6rant6 I would say that as an alpha female she would not phrase it as “not knowing ‘anything’ ” about something. That would be a sign of weakness in my opinion. Since the weaker one corrected her, I’d say it’s more then likely a snap-back. On impulse “shit” works or “I don’t give a shit” I would need to know the tone and flow of the story to either fill in the blank or just omit it. In my opinion, it really does all depend on what has led up to this point. (unless you are setting the tone) i still like brit-fuckin-tanica myself ; )

I’m not an English major or author though, I just like to read and pretty much don’t know squat myself ; )

In context, natural sounding dialog would be “I don’t know shit about his mother, but…”
I like brit-fuckin-tanica too but it’s a bit dated as a reference. I might go with “What am I, wiki-fuckin-pedia?”

@Blueroses LOL I like that! wikfuckinpedia
(Britannica shows my preference for books I guess) ; )
