What were some of your favorite series finale?

Asked by Joker94 (8180points) September 22nd, 2011

Let’s try to keep this relatively spoiler free. The question pretty much explains itself, I think. For the sake of some people out there, let’s try to say why we loved the finales without really giving away the plot.

I really liked the finale of Everybody Loves Raymond. I was glad it ended just like any other episode would have, while still having a sense of finality about it. Other than that, I’d say 24 was high on the list, as was Avatar: The Last Airbender.

M*A*S*H because certain feelings between the major characters were revealed/or confirmed and you finally got the sense of relief that they were all going home, even if some of them (throuought the run of the show) never made it home.

Mary Tyler Moore Show because it was hilarious as well as being sentimental.

The Nanny because it left off right at the point when everybody’s dreams came true.

Friends because you knew that everybody was going to be OK, and that everybody who should end up together, did end up together.

Will and Grace because you knew that although the 2 main characters could never have a real romantic relationship together, because one of them was straight and the other one was gay, you knew for a fact that they would love each other forever and their lives would always be intertwined.

Everwood because even though there were a lot of ups and downs and surprises and painful disappointments for all of the main characters, the 2 main people that should’ve ended up together (from what we saw in the very first episode) did end up together, and another another couple made an amazing, romantic coupling, after years of secret longing. And everything was OK.

Monk because he finally found out what happned with the “mystery situation”, was able to grieve and was able to love someone new, that just happened to have a common denominator to his agonizing situation, the “mystery situation” that was presented on the very first episode. Also, one of the old characters, that had been off the show for the last few seasons returned with a very happy announcement. Everybody was OK, everybody was happy, all was revealed and we were all able to move forward. Although I wept like a baby!

@zensky Lost Season 5 was the best imho, better than the series finale itself (as far as I’m concerned, it was series finale enough for me).

I guess my favorite series finale, then, would have to be that of Friends. And it’s not that I didn’t like the series finale of Lost, I got teary-eyed during it and everything, but it didn’t top the season finale of Season 5 for me.

St. Elsewhere because as @chyna said about Seinfeld, it was just so St. Elsewhere. Also Newhart because it was just so Dynasty.—At
least I think that was the nighttime soap Newhart spoofed.—

Joker94's avatar

@chyna Really? I thought most people hated the Seinfeld finale!
@Kardamom The Nanny finale was absolutely perfect. I loved it!
@SuperMouse I’ve heard that finale mentioned on a lot of Best lists, haha.

@SuperMouse I forgot about Newhart. Perfect!
@Joker94 Yeah, I’m weird like that.

I actually love the Seinfeld finale. It has an existential/absurd tone similar to the works of Camus.

The way Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended might have made me tear up a little.

For a surprise ending, the record all time best

NEWHART !

Can’t really say much more without it being a spoiler. But I doubt if there was anyone in America (except cave dwellers)
who wasn’t aware of it the next day, even if only tangentially.

One little tidbit is that this ending was suggested by Bob Newhart’s real life wife.

Pure COMEDY GOLD. THE BEST.

And on a more serious note and because it stayed true to the characters and the tone of the show: THE SHIELD

Six Feet Under

I agree with Friends and M.A.S.H.

I loved the latter more than I can say.

One of my all-time favorites still has to be The West Wing.

Roseanne, without a doubt – because it added a whole new layer of perspective and complexity to the entire show, and because it made the final season much more meaningful than the apparently frivolous plot about them winning the lotto made it appear to be at first.

Dr_C's avatar

The part where she mantioned losing Dan…. I agree. Roseanne was a great finale.

Kardamom's avatar

Oh God! @wildpotato I had almost forgotten about Roseanne. That too, was a kick in the stomach, three hanky weeper : (

And that just reminded me of the finale of The Wonder Years. Now I’m gonna start bawling all over again : (

I agree with M*A*S*H and NEWHART.

My two favorite (for very different reasons).

I vote for Newhart! I totally didn’t expect that.

I’m going to give away how geeky I am at heart here, but….. Star Trek, the Next Generation’s last episode/s (it was a 2 or 3 parter).

Loved it.

Joker94's avatar

A lot of votes for Newhart, which I haven’t seen. I’ve heard that it was one of the best finales of all time, and a lot of shows ssince have payed homage to it.
@Kardamom My God. The Wonder Years.. :(
