Would you make a list of must-haves when visiting your neck of the woods?

Asked by zensky (13418points) September 24th, 2011

Drink?
Eats?

If you don’t mind identifying the country/city/place you are at – you could list must-see places of interest/historic value.

Best restaurant/sports activity.

Things of that sort. You decide how much you want to reveal about the place you’re at. I can understand and respect privacy.

I’ll add mine later on.

I may suggest the Wilson Falls. Otherwise, I’d point your ass outa my sorry town and over to MontrĂ©al lol.

Let’s just say that “preferred sport” is mugging and hit and run in south side…

I don’t mind saying where I live. No one in the U.S., let alone the rest of the world, ever remembers that Delaware even exists so even if I mention it they will soon forget. So…you need to eat a real Delaware sub sandwich and a cheese steak, none of that Philly hoagie crap or cheese steaks with Cheezwiz on them; you aslo need to go to Longwood Gardens, which is actually in Pennsylvania, technically, just north of the border. It’s a world class botanical garden and a wonderful place, and you need to drink some Dogfish Head beer, from the brewery in Milton. And if you Zen, you yourself, came here in the summer you could go to one of the beaches we have, like Rehoboth and talk to the life guards about life guard stuff.

What else? Well, if you happen to be here in early November, you can take in some Punkin’ Chunkin. I’m not saying it’s necessarily it’s something to be proud of, but we did invent the stupid “sport” here. And a trip to Philly might be a good idea. It’s not too far from. Lots to see, in terms of U.S. history and the National Constitution Center is there.

Also, if you like dioxins and other toxic waste we have a fair amount of it here, but maybe not as much as New Jersey. If you like that kind of stuff you might be better off in Jersey.

Sights:

H.H. Richardson Complex Buffalo’s original asylum.
City Hall An art-deco style building that is still impressive to see.
Albright-Knox Art Gallery One of the world’s best collections of modern art (not my words, I don’t care for modern art).
Burchfield Penney Art Center An art museum that features only local artists, both past and current.
Delaware Park An Olmstead park designed for the 1901 Pan-Am Exposition.
Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens Another Olmstead creation.
Electric Tower Modeled after the Pan-Am Exposition’s electric tower.
Forest Lawn cemetery A large cemetery next to Delaware Park. Includes Frank Lloyd Wright’s Blue Sky Mausoleum. The most notable people buried here are President Millard Fillmore and Rick James.
Darwin Martin House Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie style house.
Wilcox Mansion Mansion in which Teddy Roosevelt was sworn in as President of the United States.
Central Terminal Massive train terminal that was a major hub when trains were the main source of transportation.
St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church A gorgeous Roman Catholic church.

Events:

Taste of Buffalo A chance to sample from many of the restaurants in the area all in one place.
Shakespeare in the (Delaware) Park Free performances of Shakespeare performed out in the open. There are 2 plays every year.
Theater District Buffalo has a thriving theater culture. Watch the video, it’ll tell you more than I could.
Buffalo Sabres Hockey Sabres fans are crazy. We will stand outside the (former) Arena in barely above freezing temperatures to watch games outside when games sell out near the end of the season and during the playoffs. We love our hockey as much as any Canadian city or town.
Buffalo Bandits Lacrosse Bandits fans are almost as crazy as Sabres fans.

Food and drinks:

Anchor Bar Home of the first chicken wings (they are NOT called Buffalo wings).
Ulrich’s Tavern Oldest tavern in the city with arguably the best beef on ‘weck.
Pearl Street Grill & Brewery Downtown restaurant with at least 7 self brewed beers, some of which are seasonal. Much of the food is made with their beer as well.
Seabar Best sushi in the city.
Chippewa District: The club district. Only about two blocks long, but if you try to drive down it on a weekend (even in the winter), be prepared to wait.
Allentown Where people go to drink when they are done with the Chippewa club scene.
223 Allen, a.k.a. The Old Pink A dive bar that no one goes to until 3 a.m. (yes, last call is 4 a.m. here), but everyone ends up there then.
Elmwood Village Many restaurants mixed with a few bars in one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city.

Events/Sights/Activities of note within a day trip distance:

Niagara Falls Do I really need to explain this one?
Buffalo Bills Football Yes, for a long time the team has sucked, but the Bills fans (I’m not one) are still very vocal in their support and it is still fun to go to even when they lose.
Ellicottville The only real skiing/snowboarding in the area. Has a brand new (as in, I haven’t been able to try it yet) sky park for summer activities too.
Letchworth State Park Known as “The Grand Canyon of the East”. One of my favorite places that I’ve ever been to. Pictures don’t do it justice.
Old Fort Niagara Historic fort that guarded the mouth of the Niagara River. Important during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

That’s a fairly concise look at things in my city. I could go on longer, but that’s far too many links as is.

The Calgary Stampede is world renowned.

I love, love, LOVE The Royal Tyrell Museum. It is world class and smack dab in the Alberta Badlands.

The Calgary Zoo is a really nice zoo.

You can get lost in The Glenbow Museum for a day or two.

The Calgary Science Centre is in a brand new location.

We are also a hop, skip and a jump away from Banff and the Columbia Icefields

And, believe it or not, we are one of the most bikeable cities in Canada thanks to our extensive bike path system.

@tranquilsea

I’ve always wanted to go to the Calgary Stampede! Maybe someday. :-)

tranquilsea's avatar

@Coloma you can swing by and stay with me any day :-) the house is a little loud with teenagers, dogs, and my head injured sister but we are a lot of fun usually.

The City Bus Tour is worth doing. There is the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum or you could take a trip doon the watter on the Waverley. A scenic train ride on the West Highland Railway is also highly recommended.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Like @Bluefreedom, I’m also in Arizona. I’ve enjoyed and can recommend:

Grand Canyon

Off road Jeep tours of Sedona

Anywhere in Jerome, especially if you take a mine into the old copper mine or get on ATV’s to explore the mountains.

Verde Canyon Railroad

Tuzigoot National Monument

Kartchner Caverns

Heard Museum

Superstition Mountains

Sanctuary for any degree of spoiling you want with gorgeous views.

I like the town of Oatman with all the wild burros roaming around. :-D

Neizvestnaya's avatar

@Coloma: When go sailing on Lake Pleasant, there are wild burros in packs there too. I’m going to check out the town you mention since we love to go once a month somewhere new if possible :)

Bluefreedom's avatar

@Neizvestnaya. I’ve seen some of those at one time or another.

Coloma's avatar

I had a BLM burro years ago, she came from Nevada. Minnie Pearl!
She liked Captain Crunch cereal and that was the only thing that made her walk with the kids on her back. lol

When a part of my wifes family flies in from Michigan, we will first drive around San Francisco, and see:
Lombard Street
The Mission (burritos at La Cumbre)
The Castro
Chinatown
Fishermans Wharf (we’ll get Crab)
Alcatraz
Haight/Ashbury (my daughter works in a body piercing place there)
and a walk across The Golden Gate Bridge.

Day two we’ll take them to Napa, for some wine tasting (my sister works at a winery).
Day three we run up north, to our retirement place, and show them life in the mountains.

zensky's avatar

I am so visiting you someday, @filmfann. Thanks for all the posts, jells.

wilma's avatar

@filmfann what do you go see when you visit your wife’s family in Michigan?

filmfann's avatar

@wilma Cabela’s, Lake Erie, and an Olive Garden in Toledo.

wilma's avatar

@filmfann next time maybe try to make your way up north, perhaps along the Lake Huron shore to Mackinaw and then on to the U.P. You won’t be sorry!

@Coloma @tranquilsea I will “second” the Pat Benetar lookalike…..definitely

I thought I would answer for DC:

Arlington National Cemetery. One of our national cemeteries where our soldiers are buried.

The Smithsonian museums. All free. Contains National Treasures. I love Air and Space the most, make sure you see the movie To Fly in the Imax. I also like the Postal Museum, which not many people put ontheir tour plans.

If you go during Cherry blossom in early April it is beautiful to see all the trees in bloom

All throughout the summer there are festivals on The Mall

The Capitol Building

The White House (you need advanced reservations to go on the tour)

And Florida
South Beach, Miami (party all night til the break of dawn)

Disney World in Orlando

Boca Raton (a very pretty place, Mizner Park for restaurants, shopping, concerts, and walking around. Also, shopping at Town Center Mall: Bloomingdale’s, Neiman’s, Saks, Macy’s, Tiffany’s, Williams and Sonoma, and more. Pretty Beaches, go a little south to Deerfield Beach and the beaches are a little more active. The Boca Raton Resort is one of the elite paces to stay, it has a main hotel and a Beach Resort, a boat you can take that connects the two. Morikami Museum. Tons of good restaurants local and chains in the Boca area.

Eat at TooJays (all over FL) for a Pastrami on Rye and Mounds Cake (coconut and chocolate)

Palm Beach go to City Place. Beautiful to walk around grab lunch or dinner, shop, see a movie.
Worth Avenue. Very high end shopping. Hermes, Tiffany’s, and more.

@filmfann If you haven’t been to the Ford museum it is excellent, just an hour from Toledo. It isn’t just cars it is all sorts of engineering advancements.
