What career or business to pursue?

Asked by csenglim (5points) September 25th, 2011

I am changing career and I am out of ideas…but I know myself on what I am good at and what I am not thus here are the parameters:

A career that:
1. Involves design or creative process.
2. Travelling
3. Minimal selling ( I can hire sales ) or meeting with people I don’t know
4. No need to be very dependent on ‘higher’ authority, shareholders or third party skills
5. If possible allow me to spend time with family more
6. Creating products or offering services that people will want to buy because its their needs

I don’t know if you’l find any job that involves travelling but not meeting new people.

Motivational speaker, but you might want to meet people afterwards, but that’s up to you. You can pretend to meet people afterwards as a book signing/photo op.

You’ve got some conflicts within your stipulations:

As mentioned, you want to travel but not meet with people you don’t know? Or travel but spend time with family more?

You’re going to have to rethink some of those you’ve listed. If ultimately you want to create products/offer services that people will want and you’ve got the drive to be a self-starter… start a business. Become an entrepreneur. Start doing freelancing/consulting.

Thank you for the response. I don’t mean totally not meeting anyone. Meeting clients or customers is ok for me. I just don’t want to waste time meeting with unnecessary people such as in a typical so called ‘networking’ events that is a total waste of time.

Networking is never a waste of time. Networking is how you get clients and customers.

It seems you would like to be independent and creative. Focus on the most essential elements first. Many people want to “travel” but you must realize everyone has this desire… you are not specific enough. Also traveling for business is completely different than for pleasure. It is work. It is not a walk in the park or a picnic.

Look for careers that allow you some freedom to make your own decisions and create. If you are thinking of starting a business of your own realize that it will most likely be harder than anything you’ve ever done. Few reach overnight success, and almost none can be successful without proper effort.

You need to explore and figure out more specifically what you like and do not like… both are valuable. This may mean you actually need to DO something rather than think about it. Many people get into careers with preconceived notions and are unsatisfied later. Research as much as possible so you know what you’re getting in to.

Switching new careers is a difficult task. But if you live in America, then I offer this quote: “This is America, pick a job you want to do and become the person that does that job.” It will not be easy… if you want an easier life you are not prepared to be more independent because you do not understand the first thing about independence.

In all human affairs their are efforts and their are outcomes. The strength of the effort is the measure of the outcome. Put in the effort and you will find something that fulfills you.
