Can humans or animals get sick from power tower lines?

Asked by chyna (51572points) September 25th, 2011

Here is a picture of the kind of power tower on my property. Can living this close to the lines make humans or animals sick or give them cancer?

I recently saw a documentary that said yes but the power companies say no. I sure wouldn’t want to live under one, you can feel the hum and it kind of made my hair stand on end.

There was a study counting the number of people who lived next to power lines and had cancer, and stated that there were a lot of people with cancer. But there was no control experiment done counting those with cancer who were not by power lines, which renders the study worthless. After all, the number of people with cancer is high anyway.

In my opinion, there is no excessive risk posed by the power lines that you won’t encounter anywhere else. The dye in cola drinks, for example, is carcinogenic and is consumed by millions. We power our cars with stuff that causes cancer. Don’t worry too much.

It depends on who you ask. I have read a good bit and have seen specials on TV about it and, for me, the answer is not conclusive. I, myself, would not live close to a major power line like the one pictured.

There have been studies that showed a statistical link between the two so there might be a risk but as yet no biological explanation has demonstrated how they might actually cause it.

The step-down transformers have been implicated in other studies, the powerful magnetic fields inherently radiating from that sort of gizmo seem to have the potential for some physiological mayhem.

I suspect so. I have no proof, but it makes sense.

One explanation I have heard is that the herbicides used around the base of these towers is the actual cause of the problems.

Getting sick yes. The magnetic field is different there so one can expect a lot of headaches.
I’m not sure about cancer though.
