Student council speech help please?

Asked by lov3xDrnk (239points) September 25th, 2011

Hi!
I’d like to run my student council speech past all you Flutherites. Please comment and criticize. It’s still pretty rough, so lots of room for improvement! Thanks!

Good Morning Students, Parents and Faculty,

I’m Natalie Cahill, an eighth grader at Ojai Valley School, and I am running for student body president. As John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” If I am elected for this position, I promise I will try my best to be a great leader for all of you here. I know how it feels to look up to a student council leader, and I want to be a president all of you can rely on.
As student body president, I want to turn ideas into actions. I believe that if I am elected, I could do just that. I also want everyone to know that they have a voice, and I would love to hear it. Another thing I would like to accomplish at OVS is more integration. We all get along well, that’s for sure, but with me as president, I will definitely focus on the issues of cliques and exclusion, so OVS becomes even more of a family. I remember when I was a fifth-grader here. I had transferred in the middle of the year and it was very frightening, but I was welcomed warmly by everyone at OVS. I would like to hold this memory with me and take it to office, so all new students and foreign students always feel welcome here. I’ll also remind you that I was you a few years ago. I looked up to the eighth graders and hoped for the day when I could run for president. That day has finally come, and I want to do everything in my power to make sure everyone gets heard.
I think it’s time for a fresh new face in office. How would the world change for the better if everything stayed the same? Like Robert Collier said, “Constant repetition carries conviction.”
And you haven’t heard all my ideas yet! While other people have being attending OVS much longer than yours truly, I have been observing the school for quite a while too. I know what needs to be improved, what needs to be added, and what I have to do to make sure things get done. So when you vote on Friday, don’t just vote for familiar faces. Vote for the girl that will fight for you. Vote Natalie Cahill for president!!

Natalie, this speech is great! Very positive, touched on personal as well as public issues/concerns. You are obviously a very intelligent young woman! If I could offer any suggestions, it would maybe try to put forth the fact that you are very approachable, and are willing to bring all concerns to council, no matter its popularity. That you are there for ALL students, not just the most visible ones! In addition, it is best to thank/commend previous student bodies for their work (as well as future!), and present that each different student body works for the greater good…Ojai Valley School! The best of luck, Natalie!!!!

Thanks so much! I appreciate your advice! Here’s a little add—on question for anyone who’s interested: What can I say at the very beginning to wake up my audience and get them involved??

Hmmm…not sure how much time you have to prepare, but what about a bit of research on previous students’ (up to decades ago) accomplishments? Their chosen careers, success, etc. Perhaps saying something like, “My fellow students, you are standing in the halls of success and history! Ojai has been the springboard for past students that have gone on to great things!” Then give examples. Not just proper, business-like examples, either….inject some fun into it! Or…..flip the coin and begin with questions. “Why are we all here today?”. Then answer after a moment or two, using someone’s correct answer. “What changes do YOU hope you will see this year?”. You’re going to get some obvious answers as well as nasty stuff, I’m sure. LOL. The trick is to acknowledge ALL of it. Then….you can turn the tables and say something like, “Do you see what just happened here? What we just did? You spoke, I listened and acknowledged your input. That is EXACTLY what you will receive if I am President. COMMUNICATION!”.

I’m likely boring you by now, but I truly hope you put your OWN spin on this and WIN!!! =)

Wow, I can’t thank you enough! That idea at the end is fantastic and i’m using it in my speech!
