Does anyone here have any experience with log cabin kits?
Has anyone built one? We’re seriously considering one, but I’d like to know what to expect ahead of time, if possible.

I don’t have an answer, but I just wanted to ask: There are really kits for building actual log cabins?! This is way past my lincoln log days O.o
Yes @Blackberry like this.
I see a lot of them, and have friends that love theirs, but I don’t know much about the construction of them.
My brother in law currently lives in a home built from a log cabin kit. It is quite nice.
There are, however, a couple of gotchas to consider.
1) Insulation. What you generally get with a kit is just the logs that from the basic walls.
2) Electrical conduits. Basically you are talking about solid logs that make up the walls, which doesn’t leave a nice hollow through which to rout your wiring.
To solve both of those problems you can put up an interior wall to hold insulation as well as electrical conduits. Of course, that kind of runs counter to the whole log cabin look that you probably generally want to begin with.
It’s not that it sucks, it’s just that those are a couple of things that one might not necessairly think about when deciding whether or not to build this type of house.
As for my brother in law’s home, as I said, it is quite nice.
@YoBob Yeah, it could make a great vacation home, but I don’t think most would want to live in one. I’m too much of a “city boy” to go without those things lol.
We were wanting to sheet rock inside anyway…most of it. I can see leaving sections showing the log for a effect, like around a fire place or something.
Well, this is heartening!
Are they very difficult to build?
