Can zombies survive in any type of weather?

Asked by KateTheGreat (13640points) September 27th, 2011 from iPhone

I was thinking about this and I’m pretty sure that a zombie wouldn’t be able to survive a winter in my hometown, where -30 is the norm. Or are their bodies immune to these forces?

Zombies don’t care about the weather. All they care about is finding brains to eat.

No, they’re still weak human bodies, even if they aren’t alive. Zombies wouldn’t survive in a barren tundra.

@YoBob that may be the case, but in an environment where it is -30 (which it is hazardous to walk outside without anything extremely protective) I don’t think they would survive unless they were wearing heavy coats and other winter gear. And what zombie has the sense to put on a coat?

Zombies can suvive. They would probably adapt to the cold and still look for some fucking flesh. I think zombies will be a little slower in the blistering cold.
@YoBob The dead don’t feel shit do they? So I’m guessing weather wouldn’t matter. Well it would to some point but yeh? Flesh flesh flesh…...

I would think they’d survive such temps, after all they no longer rely on recognized biological processes, but they would likely be frozen and immobile (and ever hungrier) until the spring thaw. After that look out, nothing like a horde of starved zombies to ruin a stroll through the spring tulips!

They would freeze in very cold weather, probably be eaten by insects and animals in swampy or rainforest-like conditions, they would be devoured in the ocean, and they would probably be preserved indefinitely in the desert… indefinitely at least, until they were completely eroded away by blowing sands.

As I really can’t see any of the forces of the weather pulling off (besides maybe a hurricane or something else with a lot of force behind it, and even then, by only sheer luck) a head shot, yes, yes they can.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard Clear this up for me and I’ll agree with you 100%. When a zombie dies basically the blood doesn’t flow and the hearts stops pumping right? No oxygen pumped by the heart or whatever – Brain is already pretty broken beyond repair so I do not see how they can die from the cold. I do agree to some point with the people who think otherwise though.

@Tbag by freeze, I meant their tissues and any moisture contained within or on them would freeze, thus rendering the zombie immobile. It wouldn’t kill it, but it would make it stay put until Spring came, assuming it was in a place where Spring actually comes.

I don’t think they could survive a tornado or a category 5 hurricane or a major eathquake.

I was reading World War Z by Max Brooks. And in it he wrote about how they freeze in very cold weather. But once spring comes some of them thaw out, depending on the zombie of course.

I sleep better at night as a direct result of the posts of @Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard .

@JilltheTooth sleep peacefully in your bed at night knowing that rough men such as myself will always stand ready to visit great violence upon those who will harm you including zombies.

I like the thought of insects and fish eating zombies. It’s an idea that is not given enough importance in zombie lore. Many animals, insects and fish (especially) eat dead tissue, so why not zombie tissue? It indicates that I just need to hold out long enough for the bugs, buzzards, and fish to finish off the undead. Of course there will then be the overabundance of buzzards and insects to deal with…

@Fiddle Just rough men? Heh!

@KateTheGreat and wimminz, of course.

Zombies survive only in October!

woodcutter's avatar

If they were schlepping around my area this past summer I think they would slide right off the bone into a big gooey mess and then really stink.

Symbaline not on tonight?

blueiiznh's avatar

Of course they can . Proof

Come on, it’s like first grade!

Meego's avatar

Holy crap! @blueiiznh!! I thought I was safe in the winter..thanks

I’m going to say yes, zombies can tolerate all kinds of weather. To support my conclusion, I’m going to say no, I can’t find any documented proof of what I just asserted.

It’s not so much that they’re ’‘immune’’ to anything, rather than they don’t register anything as a threat, and perceive no signals to do something about any given threat that we humans do. (besides eating)
But they’re only ’‘not immune’’ because they can still be damaged.

Zombies could survive in -30 weather, maybe even more. However, their movement, already impeded by their physical disposition, would be greatly reduced. They would stiffen up due to the cold, and probably eventually fall, and no longer be able to get up. They would eventually freeze, but would not die. Extreme cold greatly slows the decomposition process, and sometimes even halts it. They would just lay there until Spring came, snow melted and then they would resume their activity as soon as they’re able to move. It is my belief that a zombie doesn’t die of ’‘starvation’’, but rather of decomposition (or at least until the small part of their brain which animates them rots away, as with nourishment it doesn’t regenerate) or destruction.
If it was in the North Pole or some other place that always has snow, I’m not entirely sure how indefinitely they would stay frozen, but probably a damn long time.

Sprinting zombies though, might be able to avoid being frozen, as they are much faster and active. But this is usually when they’re hunting. If there’s no one around for miles, the same fate as the classic zombie would probably befall it.

If you haven’t already seen it, I’d suggest watching Dead Snow. About zombies in the snows of Norway. Granted, it doesn’t explore much the whole technical side of zombies and weather, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

@Symbeline ahhh a good old Nazi Zombie movie, love the ending of it btw.

Berserker's avatar

@King_Pariah Yeah…if only those people knew what needed to be done to stop this…so simple. XD

I also love that part when that dude gets in their cottage, and then starts blasting the coffee that girl made for him. He’s telling of the legend and all, but just won’t stop saying how nasty the coffee is. I lold lots. :D

King_Pariah's avatar

I really lold at the part where he gets hit on the head and then impales and guts himself on a low broken broken.
