Okay, so I just went out to work on the exterior of my parent's home and found a dead cat, what should I do?
So I walked out only to stumble upon a big dead cat (probably 20 pounds if not more). Obviously it was killed by my brothers dog, but it was in our backyard, and well, all furry things tend to die when entering my bro’s dog’s lair (but she LLLLUUUUURRRRVVVVEEESSSS people, if you were a thief she’d go belly up demanding for a belly rub). Anyway, what should I do? post flyers saying FOUND: dead cat in our backyard? Approach a neighbor to whom I believe the cat may have belonged to? Toss it? Currently it’s double bagged in a cooler. Advice?

Ewww! Sorry to hear that. If you know who the cat belongs to, you should notify them of your find. I think the flyer’s would be kinda tacky. Bury it and give it a proper send off.
Have a seance and find out his name then you can bury him. Nah, don’t do that.
Oh man… yes just in case it is someone’s cat put out some mini posters about finding a dead cat. In a couple of days time get rid of the body.
p.s. won’t your brother get into some sort of trouble about his dog if it turns out to be a pet cat?
Call animal control.
Maybe take a photo in case someone is looking for their cat.
@King_Pariah LOL I would hold a Kitty funeral and make the Dog go to confession at the local Junk Yard.
Take lots of photos and then place a discreet ad in the lost and found section.
@Jellie that’s a bit of a gray area as the cat was in our backyard and well, our dog is known in the neighborhood for killing whatever comes into our backyard (minus some birds and all people for some reason) which they’re thankful since that took care of the neighborhoods possum and more recently raccoon problem more or less.
I think you have a responsibility to try to locate the owners, especially if you already think you know who they are.
If it were my cat I would want to know, and, I think that even if they are upset, you have a responsibility of full disclosure and giving them the option of taking possession of their pets body to do with what they choose.
I don’t care if the cat was off it’s property, I also think that keeping a cat killing dog around is highly irresponsible and there is nothing funny about it.
If I had a dog that killed cats I’d gas his ass real quick.
@King_Pariah I wouldn’t tell your insurance agent that. If he ever bites a kid you’re in a world of hurt.
Turns out it didn’t belong to the people I thought it did.
@Adirondackwannabe she wouldn’t bite a kid, every person she meets she just rolls over for a belly rub. She has a soft mouth as well.
The “found dead cat in our backyard” part made me laugh so hard. :))))))))))))))))))))
@Coloma If my dog can manage to sneak up on a duck, he’ll happily shake it until it expires. It doesn’t mean he’s a vicious killer and I don’t allow him to harass wildlife when we’re off our property. But if a duck lands in my yard, it just might be the duck’s unlucky day. Natural instinct isn’t always pretty but it sounds like the people in question take adequate responsibility by containing this dog.
If it were me, I’d put up a simple flyer (no photo of dead cat) that says “Have you lost your cat? Call _______” Only out of kindness to give the owner closure, but I wouldn’t admit any liability. That can turn on you.
@Blueroses
I understand the nature of dogs, and I agree with not allowing our dogs to harass other animals.
I do feel though that it is important to be honest. There is no liability in a dog killing a cat in it;s yard unless it is running loose and worrying neighborhood pets/livestock. I dunno..I’d go for total honesty..” I am SO sorry, but…this is what I think happened.”
I have always had cats with the dogs I have had, so a cat killer would not have been tolerated in my home.
To each his own. :-)
Double bagged in a cooler? Personally I think that was too much effort, LOL
I’da just dug a hole and stuck it in.
Ask @Symbeline to resurrect it and turn it into a zombie cat :-p
