What's so great about this world?

Asked by KatawaGrey (21483points) September 27th, 2011

This question got me to thinking. Many people both on that thread and in real life say they refuse to have children because the world is a terrible place. I admit that I disagree. Yeah, there are horrible things in this world and sometimes they get me down too, but then I talk to my mom and she tells me about the people who rallied around her to help her get pregnant. She’s also told me about my biological father who only donated sperm because he wanted to help someone get pregnant. Hearing that people, even a guy who’d never met her, wanted my momma to get pregnant makes me think that this world ain’t so bad.

So, collective, how about you? Why is it worth it to bring a child into this world?

In the long term, morals and technology are almost constantly getting better.

Though I don’t want children myself.

How tragedy can sometimes bring out the best in people. During the nuclear melt down in Japan, so many stories of self sacrifice came out. It was wonderful and sad to see how some people sacrificed themselves for love ones and strangers alike. For all our differences and bias, it was great seeing how we can still cling together as a human race when others need our help. Even when the tragedy was man made.
True there were others who use tragedy to take advantage but it doesn’t erase all the good deeds done by others.
It was also great to see a society not panic and muster up all their courage to do what was needed. I think it showed a side to man kind rarely seen.
In all the years I’ve lived, I never seen such a huge display of heroism and courage. It certainly gave me hope that all is not lost in our world.

The fact that humans can do this makes this a great world.

The natural beauty of the world alone is worth having a child for. No one see nature and the world as more magical than children.

The forests, the seas, the mountains are magnificent.

Love is a very powerful force. The love of a parent for a child and a child for a parent is wonderful.

What’s great about this world? Depends on whose point of view you want to take. From the human point of view it is great because it allows us to exist. We don’t have to judge our existence. But if people decide existence is bad, they don’t have children. For those of us who like existence, children represent hope for the future of our kind.

I happen to think life is an incredible gift and I am very grateful to be able to bestow that gift on two wonderful children. It was not an easy thing and nearly didn’t happen. Had I been born five years earlier, it never would have happened.

Without life, there is no consciousness, as far as I can tell. Without consciousness, there are no thoughts or nothing interesting. I think it is a wonderful thing to find out what happens next. It is even more exciting to be able to influence what happens next. Those are the things I think are so great about life. The world is great in that it facilitates life.

Raising a child is a scary proposition, no matter the state of the world. Better you than me :-p

Still, I think right now is a fantastic time to be alive. Back in colonial times, and in medieval times, life was short and brutish. Now we have creature comforts and entertainment, life-saving medicine, and drugs that knock you out when you do need surgery. We only hear about horrific events because (1) there are Billions and Billions of people in the world, and (2) we have instant worldwide news coverage; not because the world is becoming less civil. People are becoming more civilized than ever before in human history.

Can’t say it better than Louis…

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They’re really saying I love you.

I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They’ll learn much more than I’ll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world.

There’s @tinyfaery, now, and Buffy comes to mind!

Everything and nothing. I’m a strict existentialist.

The only thing I hold reverence for is nature. It is awesome (truly), terrible, imperfect and cruel, yet it is beautiful and
gentle, perfect and generous. (Yeah. Another contradiction.) I mostly believe all we are is nature, and thus humans are meaningless, yet one of the only reasons for living (for many) are other people. Ahh…the absurdity of life.

Buffy, sugar and sex are pretty good, too.

@tinyfaery: Meet me halfway in Colorado. There are fewer natural wonders more beautiful than the mountains in summer.

I’m pretty much down to go anywhere.

Thanks to another jelly, I have to admit that humanity cannot be as bad as I had made it out to be, that perhaps I wasn’t the monster I had thought myself for these nearly past 10 years. And for that, for people like that, I think that maybe, just maybe it’d be worth it.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Yes, the existence of puppies alone makes this a great world. Good point, @nikipedia . Then you add in stuff like ice cream and rivers and movies with your kid and wading in the surf and stuff, yeah, really great world!

Girls can have orgasms? Huh, guess you do learn something everyday. Lol :P

Hopefully some generation will come along and get it right. Why deprive a child (any child) of that opportunity.

Being a pessimist, I’m often quick to say that shit sucks and all should be destroyed. But I’m not serious, I’m just a stupid and angry individual. In fact I think a lot of people who say that and mean it are totally immature. There is a lot of cool stuff in the world, and cool people. I personally believe there’s more bad, but what good I have come to know is worth striving for, or being thankful for if it finds you. Guess it really depends on the person though.
I’m glad I live in a country where I can say what I want about religion and not get my head chopped off, even if on the other hand, I believe that countries and patriotism only exist to sever man’s bond to his fellow bro.
For things I have control over…more or less anyways, I have good friends who not only accept me for what I am, but enjoy what I am. I hope I’m as good a friend to them as they are to me. If I got friends like that, then other people as such probably exist all over. That’s a good thing. What else is good in the world? Video games, movies, books, music. They might often serve to get away from the actual world, but they’re all man made, so it’s a good thing that humans are capable of art. In fact, it’s awesome.
There’s a lot of simple things too. I find that sitting by the river with a coffee and my smokes on a chilly Autumn day for an hour does wonders for the darkness that prevails much of anything.

Totally not my brand of answer, but I like complaining about shit and feeling sorry for myself, so…XD

Also, zombies.

That’s a beautiful answer, @Symbeline. Wish I could give you more than one GA! You are turning into a pretty deep philosopher right before our very eyes. I hope to see more answers like this one. I also like the cynical ones, too.

Thank you. :) And don’t worry, I still got a buncha cynical shit to spew forth. :D

I think every generation thinks the world is going to hell in a hand basket. And maybe they are right. However that will never stop the conservatives from having large families, so go ahead liberals keep on going childless and watch what happens.

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

What’s great for them is that they can discover for themselves what is fun and pleasurable. Life has a lot to offer——the beauty of nature, technology, friendships, sex, love, etc. By making life, we as parents give that chance to our children.

Paradox1's avatar

Assuming the world was all those terrible things you mentioned, I would want children to help make it right, to help make it better for others.

Honestly without children what’s even the point of creating a beautiful world? I think kids make the world go round… that and sex, but you could argue they’re one and the same.

But I think this life is what you make of it, and appreciation gives meaning to all. So I choose to see beauty, honor, virtue.
