Can you think of any mythical creatures similar to trolls, elves, etc?

Asked by Afos22 (3990points) September 27th, 2011

How many small mythical creatures can we think of? I’m looking for any creature that is comparable to a troll or elf. This means any little creature that is similar to humans in shape, but smaller. I can think of elf, gnome, troll, goblin, smurf, leprechaun. Can you think of any others?

I guess halflings, better known as hobbits.

I’m often confused about the word ’‘troll’’...in Dungeons&Dragons, a troll is usually some eleven foot tall monstrosity that uses tree trunks as weapons. :/ But it’s also used for something small in other mediums. Hm.

We also got beings like nymphs, which if I’m not mistaken, are kinda like fairies, but much bigger, yet a little smaller than a human. Those are similar to elves in that they’re all one with nature and shit, in fact, even more so than elves themselves. Usually they’re depicted as a physical manifestation of nature itself, beyond trees and rivers and stuff.

Irish mythology also has brownies, which are nasty little brown skinned imps that smell like spoiled milk and like to play tricks and cause misfortune on humans. But if you play by their rules, they can be very kindly. I don’t think those are said to be much taller than half a mug of beer though lol.

The Russian domovoye and Japanese “kappa” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kappa_(folklore) might fit what you’re looking for.

Apparently concluding that there wasn’t enough strangeness in the world, art teacher Ms. Florence Pretz of St. Louis, Missouri gave to the world the Billiken. It was subsequently adopted as the official mascot of the prestigious St. Louis University.

Boggarts. They feature in the folklore of the north-west of England, they’re malevolent household faeries that cause mischief such as curdling milk, misplacing objects and making livestock go lame.

Berserker's avatar

@downtide And they always make sure that if you drop your toast, it lands on the buttered side. XD

That’s the ones @Symbeline . They’ve embraced modern technology too; they keep hiding my cellphone.

In Africa, the natives have a mythical little scary guy called the “tokoloshe.” The myth is so ingrained that they won’t sleep on the floor. They always put blocks under their beds so the tokolosh can’t get them. For more information, google “africa tokoloshe.”

WestRiverrat's avatar

There is the native american wendigo.

Berserker's avatar

@WestRiverrat Oh yeah, that’s what it’s called. I read about those in a ghost stories book. (apparently real ghost stories) I couldn’t remember the name for the longest time, and I always popped up with winnebago.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Winnebago is a motor home. On of those monster sized campers. lol

Berserker's avatar

O_O Man was I off the track…

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Winnebago sounds Indian so I searched and it is. There was a tribe in the midwest.
