Macbook Pro shutting down after 10 min of use, then has to rest for hour before I can restart it?

Asked by Bretbocook (105points) September 27th, 2011

The mac pro is about 2 years old; the computer works periodically normal; then the bottom of computer gets really hot and fan starts, then computer mouse freezes and have to turn it off. Then can’t restart it for about 24 hours, (if you try to restart before 24 hrs, fan goes on, but no picture, so have to turn it off for 24 hrs) completely off with no so no fan going, then can start it up again and it is fresh and works for a day, two or a week sometimes, and then cycle keep continues.
Prior to this, the screen was flickering on and off, and have to adjust the screen at a certain angle to keep the screen on (this was occuring for a year). Question is: is it worth fixing and what is wrong? Computer is out of warranty…

There must be a problem with the fan I guess? I do not know if it’s worth fixing but I think you should take it to the nearest apple store and have them check it out? From the way I see it, I think you should get the new macbook pro. Good luck :)

It’s dying. New battery perhaps, new fans perhaps, new harddrive. Two years old? Probably its burnt out. From now on, use your laptop on top of a laptop fan with something underneath that for flat surface. I’d grab a new Pro or a MacBookAir if you’re just web browsing and storing music.

Most Mac products do not die in such a short period of time, so I would venture to say that this is an unusual situation. I’d take @Tbag‘s advise and take it to the Apple store, if it’s not too long past warranty, they just might fix it for free. In either case you’ll get a free diagnosis, and can then figure out if it’s worth fixing. Best of luck, .

Definitely the Apple Store is the best option if you can manage it.

Buy a Windows PC!

Definitely sounds like a heating issue, the computer forces a shutdown when the inside temperature gets dangerously hot. A trip to the Genius Bar at your apple store’s in order.

One difference between Apple and non-Apple products is that we can talk you through repairing a non-Apple product, and you may actually have the tools to follow our directions. Working on laptops is kind of a hassle anyways, but Macbooks are truly a pain in the ass. It probably is an overheating issue, and it’s probably best handled by a professional.

However, the new Core i5/i7 models are such an upgrade over your old Core2 Duo that, if you can swing the $$$, it really is worth the upgrade. Given that you are having multiple issues with your current rig, I say it’s time to move on.
