Do you have a birthday present suggestions for a girl I've been dating for about 7 months?
We’ve been dating for a while now, and we like each other very much. I’ve already signed us up for a paella cooking class this Saturday, which involves sitting down with the head chef of a local Spanish restaurant drinking wine and having him teach a small group of people how he cooks his paella. I think it’s going to be a great date, but I know how much women like to open things, so I was hoping you guys could come up with some clever suggestions.
About my girlfriend: she’s smart, practical, Italian, feisty, owns and takes care of several horses, isn’t really into “girly” things, but she can dress up when appropriate. She’s a student finishing up her BS and plans on going into Nursing school. I’ve considered jewelry, but that can be awkward early in a relationship (you don’t want to buy “cheap” jewelry, but you can’t spend too much or it’s weird). I’m 30 and she’s turning 28.

How about a small porcelain or glass horse knick knack she can put on her desk.
How about a horse lucky charm?
Do you have Massage Envy franchises in your area? They offer a first visit massage for about $40.00 and also good prices for packages of say, three or five visits.
Your ladyfriend may be different, but the gifts my wife likes best are the ones that don’t necessarily tie in to something most people know about her. Usually the best ones come from something she just mentions in passing that she’s interested in or would love to try.
It sounds like you don’t have much time though, in your shoes I’d probably plan a little day trip to do something fun together. If she digs wine, maybe visit one of those wine tasting vineyards in your area (depending on where you are), if she’s into the water, rent a boat or a canoe for an afternoon, just something simple that you guys can both enjoy and that you’ll enjoy together.
He already has a day planned, he just wanted to get her something to unwrap too. If I read the question correctly he is taking her to a cooking class which I assume she is interested in.
Does she read and have a favorite book? Maybe a special edition of something you know she loves.
Thanks for all of the suggestions thus far. @Judi she’s taking 2 anatomy classes this semester, so she really doesn’t have much time to read anything but textbooks, but I really like how unique your suggestion is.
@Neizvestnaya massages might work, but she had back surgery about 4 months ago. They might feel really great, or they could make things worse, so I’m not sure (she always complains when I rub her back—it’s always too hard). The other thing about massages is that there’s nothing tangible to show for it after it’s over. I was thinking of giving her something that might last a while.
I’ve been looking at horse jewelry online, but most of it looks tacky (like it’s meant for little girls who win their first horse show or something).
@gorillapaws: Ferragamo makes very nice “grown up” bridle bit motif accessories ;p
What about some electronic gadget? An iPod mini/shuffle or a docking station are always nice. I never buy those things for myself but I use them everyday and there is a large range of options available for whatever your budget. It might also be fun to get her the necessities to apply your newly learned paella skills in the kitchen after your class. A pan with a couple of fun cooking utensils could be nice if she likes to cook and doesn’t yet own them. Be careful that it isn’t offensive if she isn’t much of a chef or thinks you’re trying to take away her shoes and stick her in the kitchen ;)
You indicated that she owns horses, so you could arrange for a photographer to take some photos of her favorite(s) and have it/some framed—you could actually have her unwrap the gift certificate from the photographer with a promise to frame her favs. I would frame the gift certificate from the photographer for her to unwrap . . .
Here you go darlin… and I must say, you seem like you are the sweetest boyfriend in the world, and I wont say that she is lucky because I can tell by your demenor already that you will undoubtedly respond how YOU are the lucky one… I hope the two of you have a BEAUTIFUL night. Please let us know how it goes. I love wonderful stories like this!
http://horseloversgifts.com/ *Personally, I think that bag is pretty neat. And you can fill it with other little cute things too… Her favorite books and music perhaps? Blank leather bound journaling books and a beautiful personal pen set?

I have always liked the idea too of buying inexpensive MP3 players filled with all of those love related things that you want to say to her in the form of music.
Good luck honey!
If you order I Ipod from apple, you can have it engraved . . .
How about a Swarovski necklace? Not too expensive and not too cheap. Check them out, they do have some cute stuff.
I would try to source out some really nice horse gear: boots, hats, bridles, saddles etc.
@Judi Heh heh… That is SO not worth the price. I wouldn’t care if it was handmade by small leather working magical French Hermes elves in a tree somewhere in Paris. It needs to actually be WORTH the price and in the VERY least show some indication on it that it even IS Hermes.
It does have the Hermes symbol on the latch, but I agree. You can get a nice silver Tiffany bracelet for under $200 but she may not appreciate it if she’s not girly.
@Judi Much better for the money I think. I ♥ Tiff’s
How about getting a small cute tattoo of a horse’s head with a wide grin on your arm with the words, “This stud loves yah!”-?
I wanted to post an update. The spanish cooking thing was a blast. We both had a lot of fun and learned all about paella from a Chef/owner that was born in the part of Spain that invented the paella. The food was delicious and we each got a kit with spanish rice, saffron, paprika and signed recipes.
I decided to go with the Tiffany bracelet that @Judi suggested, on Friday. It was a BIG hit, (apparently she hasn’t taken it off yet). Thanks so much for all of your thoughtful suggestions. I may use some of them for Christmas—I especially like the idea of a professional photographer taking some shots of her horse because her horse is almost 30 and may not have all that many years left—so high quality photos could become real treasures for her one day.
