How does one use resin in casting?

Asked by sushilovinfun (161points) October 5th, 2011

I have a student who wants to learn to use resin in casting, but knows very little about it. Do you have any resources that he might be able to use to learn about this, or any advice for him?

There is a well-known supplier of materials for casting, Polytek , that is a good resource both for supplies and information. They have several videos on their own YouTube channel that demonstrate various processes. That might be a good place to start.

It’s pretty straight-forward. If he’s done any other type of casting, he should pick it up pretty quick.

Except you need to use a catalyst to set the resin. Also, if you’re casting an object inside, be sure to let a layer set first (that the object will sit on). And use good ventilation, of course.

If you’re in the bay area, there’s Tap Plastics in the city (on Van Ness by the freeway). They’re awesome.
