General Question

I'm unfamiliar with iPhone3, what piece of the case is missing here?

My dad showed me his iphone for the first time, it’s an iPhone3, it looks like it’s missing a quarter inch piece of plastic on the upper left side….right above the up and down switch….underneath there is a switch which seems to manipulate the power.

He’s confused whether or not he lost the piece or if it was always like that, can anyone help?

It is the Ring/Silent button.

As an aside the 3GS is now free with a contract. And the 4 is $99 with a contract. Might be time to upgrade.
