What do you think of Congress?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37734points) October 6th, 2011

The approval ratings for Congress have reached an all time low at 14%.

I’m wondering if this has more to do with the gridlock between the parties or if it’s about the institution itself.

Personally, as an institution, I like Congress. It was formed to deliberate the people’s business. I like the idea of representatives debating how to make the country a better place.

Also on a personal note, I dislike the current gridlock there. It appears there is more posturing than real work being done.

What do you think?

I don’t generally tend to think of congress because congress doesn’t generally tend to think of me.

Old white guys who make decisions that I probably won’t agree with

Seriously, only insults and derogatory comments come to mind.

I think most of them will still be there after the next election, no matter how disappointing I find it.

I think their salaries are much too high and I think they need to be a lot more comprehensive and ethical in the process of representing issues that can affect the interests of the American people.

I don’t think there is a bigger joke than congress.

A protected class of royals.

It’s pretty sad up there right now, although I do like that there are at least a few who are speaking up and being honest. As far as the gridlock, I’m not so sure that it’s a bad thing. We’re supposed to debate – it’s what democracy should be. Unfortunately, so many special interests and lobbying has permeated, it’s become quite crappy. I look at Reid and Boehner and see fraud written all over their faces. I like the idea of congress, but I don’t like many of the people in it.

Personally, I think we get the leaders we deserve and that we demand. I see so much apathy and lack of being informed, a lack of willingness to take the process seriously among the American electorate. The members of Congress are there because we put them there. They will be accountable to us when we demand that they be accountable to us.

Same thing I thought since Jimmy Carter, vote them out after 2 terms if they do a good job, one term if they mess up. I only voted for one incumbent for congress and none for the senate.

I’m not their biggest fan.

They’re in it for their own advancement and intend on making it a life career. There isn’t anything they won’t do to keep their positions and doing right by the country is not important. I’m pretty sure if any of them saw me on fire they wouldn’t bother to piss on me to put the fire out.

TexasDude's avatar

@woodcutter they would probably use your burning corpse to light cigars made of hundred dollar bills and to barbecue exotic species they undoubtedly eat to gain their powers.

Jesus Christ!

WestRiverrat's avatar

@woodcutter I would vote for him if he ran.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard I doubt they would make their cigars out of $100s. That stuff tastes like crap when it burns.

TexasDude's avatar

@WestRiverrat I dunno if they’d do it for the flavor. More for the irony.

They can gridlock and blockade for as long as they need to. Why wouldn’t they? Their political affiliation is what seems to matter most to them in my opinion. The idea of how congress is to work is a beautiful idea, however its hard to tell who’s interest they actually hold. Is it the peoples interest? The militaries? Big business interest? Etc. I feel like America has become “the show me the money” nation. I feel like Americans sold America out to the world.
