Which society from the past would you love to live in?

Asked by dreamwolf (3163points) October 6th, 2011

It can be from a decade ago, to as far as you can think of.

Example. I would love to have lived in the Northwest region of what is now the United States of America but in the 1500s.

It depends. I’ll stay here unless I’m rich. Then I might like to visit Medieval Europe, but I’m not sure I would want to stay. Those castles can get cold and drafty.
Maybe Hawaii in the first half of the 20th century.

Ideally Paris in the 1920s. But of course, I have a romanticized view of it, and I’m sure it would be much less impressive than I imagine (especially if I weren’t in Hemingway’s circle…)

Oh, and another decade I know isn’t anywhere near as glamorous as it seems – the 1950s in America. I only say this because it means I’d have the slightest chance of seeing Dean Martin or Buddy Holly.

I will stay where I am. I can imagine if I went back in time I would be a char lady or I would have to work in a factory during the industrial revolution or if I was really lucky, I would be just the property of my spouse.

If I go back further, I can see myself wearing a scolds bridle or on a dunking stool.

Nope. Think I will stay here.

America in the late 1950s and early 1960s, especially the years between 1960 and 1963. America’s Golden Age.

I’ve always felt like a man out of time. I was supposed to be an American in the 1940’s or ‘50’s.

San Francisco during the Gold Rush.
Paris in the 1920’s.
New York in the 1970’s.
New Orleans anytime.

I’d have liked to have experienced life as a cowboy. Either as a bandit or a marshall, just to feel those holsters bouncing off my outer thigh as I mosie around the wild west like a bitch.

I would like to have been starting my adulthood in 1950’s, really any time right after second world war, still as a Canadian. Adults of this era knew what it was like to suffer and would have had a keen appreciation of the advent of prosperity. We have become, in my opinion, a society glutted out on high life and easy credit and have spoiled our offspring so they really don’t understand economic principles. Even their governments can ‘t show them the way. Also, the role models for our youngsters are a more rare commodity now since we have had enough good life to choke ourselves on it.

Toss me into the 1920’s (art deco, flappers).
