What are some switch on/power up sounds that you like [see details]?

Asked by ucme (50047points) October 9th, 2011

Yeah, by this I mean with gadgets/appliances/vehicles or whatever really. From a cute little bleep to a sleek swoosh. Maybe the sound of an engine purring as you start the ignition, you get the picture, I just know you do. You may begin.

I like the litany that mechs say when they fist power up. But it would probably get annoying after a while.

I also like the cute things that the turrets in Portal say in their sing-song voices.

Definitely the sound of hitting the acceleration hard as you make a maneuver on the highway. Vrrroooommmmmm!

Waiting for the BlueRay DVD player to announce itself, I assume, always, that nothing is happening. Then the whirring sound..

And I love the sound of Milo powering up after a nap.

I like the sound my TIG welder makes when I press the foot pedal and send bajillions of electrons hurtling across a slight gap between the tip of the torch and the metal I’m welding. It goes like this:

First there’s a slight hisss as a puff of argon flows into the gap to pave the way for the electrons.

A fraction of a second later, the pressure of all those electrons straining at the tungsten tip of the torch finally overcomes the natural reluctance of the electrons to jump out into thin air. There is a little crack! as they leap across that 1/16 of an inch of space, releasing a miniature thunderclap in the process.

That crack is followed by a calm, steady hum, which is oddly incongruous. Now hovering in that little gap is a brilliant blue-white cone, hotter than the surface of the sun, a state of matter that transforms or destroys whatever it touches, like Shiva summoned by a twitch of my right foot. And as that little cone wreaks incredible violence on the steel beneath it, all it has to say is “whmmmm”.

I like the happy little tune my Roomba plays when it starts up. It plays a different tune when it finishes vacuuming a room.

It also speaks in a British woman’s voice on occasion. “Please charge Roomba.”

I like tinkle chimes… But they do get old fast.

@cprevite That’s awesome!

I wish that my garbage disposal said this…

I would have named mine “Hazel” if I had one.

When I start my truck, at the moment it busts off, the exhaust has a cool throaty rumble before settling down to a purr. I really detest loud vehicles but this is one that sounds cool because it doesn’t sound loud when it’s running. The muffler looks to be the factory part so after 11 years it probably is in need of replacement. A brand new one is no doubt a little quieter.

Many years ago, when I had a Mac, it said this when I started it up.
My friend’s Mac said this on startup.

Nowadays I just find that sort of thing annoying (particularly on Ubuntu, with that dumb bongo noise) so I turn them off when available.

The sound of a jet engine as it works its way up the register.

@koanhead: Your first “this” produces only the sound of silence (404)..

This morning I hear the sounds of chain saws, large chippers and a bucket truck inching its way along my driveway.

New York State Electric Co. is clearing dead limbs, dying trees and underbrush along the power lines in preparation for snow, ice and wind. This is a free service and makes up, just a bit, for the enormous electric bill I get monthly. Happily my drive gives good access and lets them do tree work on my property as well; defining the property line is impossible as the electric wires wander through impenetrable cripple bush and blow down.

@gailcalled Sorry about that… hopefully this link will work better. If not, the sound is HAL 9000 from the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey saying “I am completely operational and all of my circuits are functioning perfectly.”

Thanks for pointing out the broken link!

gailcalled's avatar

“This link” is “forbidden.” At least I’m getting different error messages.

I can conjure up HAL’s voice easily. Perhaps there is a trademark or patent issue. (Poor Dave.)

Same here: You don’t have permission to access /2001/tma1/wav/operatio.wav on this server. But I think I know the sound you mean. That screech it makes when sunlight first hits it in a gazillion years?
