What do you think happens after death; is it possible to come back again willfully as a ghost?

Asked by GabrielsLamb (6191points) October 11th, 2011

Have you ever wondered if after your body dies if you can come back willfully as a ghost?

Do you think it is possible at all to command the essence, to control the will and haunt people?

*I sure hope so… We shall see?

@GabrielsLamb When we die, the brain dies.

@Blackberry Energy however moves on forever… Energy animates the brain by electric impulse in synapse. Who is to say that ever ends?

THat is actually the reason I can’t give in to atheism, because I believe in science, and more than any God or any religion, that simple fact of the brain, and energy and matter prove differnt to me. Maybe possibly within another form of consciousness, but I do believe that some element of the self lives on whatever it is, or isn’t?

Many times, I tend to believe that what we assign names to, are merely misconceptions that have obscured the truth, not of God… but of scientific realities in matter, energy inertia and kenetic energies, forces, impulse and conscisence awareness.

@GabrielsLamb I think that would be a good question to ask. I was going to ask it a long time ago, but I forgot. You should ask it.

I think if becoming a ghost was an option, they would be more common than they seem to be.

GabrielsLamb's avatar

@filmfann What would you do if you were a ghost?

I think we become nothing just as we were nothing before we were born. I’d like to come back as my cat, if I have any say in the matter.

Ghosts are willed back by the living rather than the dead. A guilty conscience, or love, can be enough to make them appear.

I don’t believe it’s possible. Our consciousness, what we are, is what’s going on in our brains. Once that’s turned off, everything that we are is turned off. Being dead is very much like being not yet born. You just don’t exist.

There’s no evidence that the part of you that is you can exist independently of a working human body, and on that basis I have no belief in ghosts, spirits, ghouls, afterlives, reincarnation, or any other mythology involving life after death.

@Soupy It’s a good thing I think, that “I believe.” doesn’t make for truth.

What fun is that?

If we don’t know these answers, isn’t it more fun to believe we can come back and haunt the Jesus out of the masses.

I say yes!

Soupy's avatar

@GabrielsLamb Yes it certainly is good!

I do agree that it’s more fun to believe, but I’ve always been a killjoy like that.

However, if I do end up being able to come back and haunt the crap out of someone I totally would.

GabrielsLamb's avatar

@Soupy That’s much better… *Smiles!

I believe in ghosts but I don’t think they appear because the human they once were wanted to become a ghost. I don’t think ghosts “haunt” people either. I believe that a ghost, and this may not make sense to anyone so I apologise in advance, is the left over energy of something that used to exist. The soul is long gone which, to me, would suggest that we couldn’t choose to come back as a ghost.

Spirit and thought require a physical architecture to run on. There is no evidence whatsoever that thinking can occur outside of a physical architecture. I think it is highly unlikely in the extreme that a person’s essence could somehow survive death. So, no. You better get your haunting in during this life if it’s so important to you.

You have asked at least one other question about revenge in which you said you didn’t really want it. You just wanted the hurtful stuff to stop. The best way to get the hurtful stuff to stop is to give the people doing it exactly the same thing. This is not revenge. It is deterrent. There’s a difference. With revenge, you want to hurt someone. Deterrent is designed to get it to stop; preferably without having to hurt them.

Forgiveness is another thing. Forgiveness is not for the person who hurt you; it is for yourself. It allows you to let go of your pain and resentment, and move on to do things that make you happy. You want to stop dwelling on the past. Ghosts are about dwelling on the past. They symbolize this obsession and the wish one could make things different, or at least haunt people who created the problem. They are about guilt and pain, and if you want to be a ghost, it is because you can’t get past what made you want to be a ghost.

That’s harsh, I know. You may not agree—at least, not now. But think about it, please. I do not say this with malice. I say this because I don’t like to see people in pain. The ghost you want to be is your pain. I hope you can let it go.

I think that if you have issues that remain unresolved at the time of your death then you can come back as a ghost until you feel you have taken care of it.I believe in god but also believe that we can be given the choice sometimes if we want to come back.

Blackberry's avatar

@emeraldisles @flutherother Do you guys have any reasoning for your answers other than opinion?

mattbrowne's avatar

Well, one needs to die in an English castle. Then there might be a chance.

GabrielsLamb's avatar

@Blackberry You can’t adaquately “reason” what is merely opinion based without proper evidence. It’s like God… Show me the money!

@mattbrowne ROFLMAO! You’re quite clever.

Blackberry's avatar

@GabrielsLamb Yes, I guess I keep forgetting that.

near death experience,talking to a medium but then again I’m not looking at science

Mariah's avatar

I personally don’t believe ghosts exist, no.

GabrielsLamb's avatar

@Rarebear If we give those worms indigestion… Does that constitute a haunting?

LOL
