What would be the best business for you to open in this economy that wouldn't fail because of it?

Asked by GabrielsLamb (6191points) October 12th, 2011

What was your personal dream business 5 -10 years ago?

How have you realistically changed that dream with the times to make it more possible in the present economy?

*Funny answers welcome as this economy merits a bit of humor I think?

My dream business? Would be a cigar shop, with magazines, a wine rack, leather sofas and walls of tall humidors.
Failproof? Funeral parlor.

@anuf A smoking funeral parlor hmmm… Seems appropriate.

Mine 10 years ago would have been an antique store.

Now I would like to open a speak-easy type bar & grill, with a hidden door in an old bookcase, behind a store front that is a used bookstore and coffee shop.

So it’s like two in one.

Oh, do they have to be linked? Sorry, I misunderstood. I could totally see cigars in a funeral parlor. I’m sure the wine would come in handy, as well.

@ANef_is_Enuf No they don’t have to be, that’s just how my brain works… No sorry necessary you did right, and well too. *Smiles.

I’ve always thought about producing porn or opening up a brothel but I don’t think I’ll survive the incoming ordeal from my family. ( except my mother who’s up for it )

I’ve long joked about becoming ” Coloma madam.” I have a great little house furnished like an asian brothal/ opium den, and, of course, I would only cater to high end local government clients the county DA and mayor.

I also joked while traveling in asia last year that if I were 30 years younger I’d have smuggled home enough opium poppy seeds to blanket my county in fields of opiate induced dreams.

I also have 5 acres where I could, if I was so inclined, plant acres of marijuana, but, alas, I’m not into having a prison experience, even if I could do a Martha Stewart stint with relative ease.

I also always joke about burning the bills in my basement, well, barn and my “crime of choice” would be counterfitting. haha

I can say with conviction that the happiest cows are not California cows, they are Vietnamese cows knee deep in fields of opium poppies, some mellow milk flows from those girls. lol

A banner factory would maybe do good business these days and years?…, with all these protests going on.

A business that would have people like me flocking to it here is a variation of “Rent-A-Husband.”

Resources for reliable and skilled people to get on ladders, use chain saws, lift heavy barges and tote heavy bale, pitch in if you get sick and need errands run, clean every nook and cranny of a refrigerator, vacuum the tops of cabinets, ceiling fans, and high chests and book cases, clean the garage, wash windows, stain and seal wooden decks and rub your back.

Insurance office. The insurance industry is fairly recession proof as most insurance is mandatory. If you can correctly screen the risky properties you can make a really good living.

A good friend of mine actually pitched a business idea recently that was downright brilliant. I won’t share, since that wouldn’t be right, but it’s not very often that you hear of business ideas that haven’t been done or thought of before… but I hope he actually does it at some point.

Personal dream as of 5–10 years ago: To have my investments grow to the point where I would be able to retire in the year 2011. Alas… as we all know the market has taken a couple of dirt sucking dives the past decade.

Honest opinion, for the best businesses: Production of “real” goods and services. I’m talking about things like local micro-farming, making clothing, making quality hand crafted furniture, etc… Frankly, I think the Amish have the right idea. The entire world economy can come crashing down and it’s really not going to effect them at all.

I would have liked to have started a realty business. Now, I’m pretty happy to be in computers. :)
