What type of experience would I have if I went to Jamaica (not to a resort)?

I’m very interested. I really don’t have any more details…that’s it. I’m just curious….what would it be like? How would I be treated? I’m 22, female, white. I would not be alone, probably with my boyfriend. This is all hypothetical, but it is a thought in the back of my mind. I have never met someone who has really gone to Jamaica, just resorts.

As soon as you hit land… Expect a 100 drug addicts to offer to braid your hair from $25 to up to $50 american believe it or not From there, it’s all uphill.
It would give a great feel for the country and it’s true culture.I spent a spring break in the Dominican Republic and we stayed at a fraternity brother’s house. We traveled all over the island and it was a real eye opener. A word of warning, stay away from the drugs. It is really bad if a foreigner busted.
A friend of mine took a tour of a marijuana field while on her honeymoon. She had been a few years clean by then, but enjoyed it.
I think how you will get treated will depend on your general attitude towards people while traveling… do you look locals in the eye? do you say ma’am and sir? do you tip well? Please don’t go with the attitude that everyone is a drug addict who wants to steal from you (not that I think you would). Travel smart, but be friendly.
I think @Adirondackwannabe‘s advice is great. In fact, I bet through acquaintances of acquaintances… you could end up being in touch with a local person in advance and “learn the ropes”/“see the sights” with them.
We were there 2 times in the last years… we organised the flights and the apartment/bungalow on our own… send me an email to ml3269@me.com and I answer with 2 or 3 adresses to ask for houses/bungalows/apartments… in the interior of the island.
Been to Jamaica twice. You will love it. The weather stays around 80 degrees year round. Jamaicians grow their own food. Their Blue Mountain coffee is some of the best on the planet. The people of Jamaica are for the most part, nice people. They do have a theifs-side to their personality and love to take advantage of tourists.
The island is guarded by The National Police that do not like to have their photo taken. The center of the island is their prison. The convicts know that attempting to escape is death. They will be shot on sight. Besides, there is no place to go. Jamaica is completly surrounded by water.
Jamician children are spotlessly clean. They wait for their school bus each morning. Most Jamaicans are poor, but they are clean people.
At the airport, the Jamaican children will approach you to sale marijuana. It is apparently legal in their country.
“You know, man, its legal”.
