Coffee talk: do I really want the $160 KitchenAid Pro Line burr grinder?

Asked by XD (1524points) October 14th, 2011 from iPhone

As someone who does French press, drip, and stovetop espresso on various occasions, a perceived need for this device has embedded itself in my brain. Based on what I’ve read, it’s one of a couple three consumer grade burr grinders that’s worth anything.

So… what do you know about coffee and by what percent will this luxury item improve my life or at least my coffee drinking experience. I’d like to have my mind settled, so I can quit obsessing about it and just buy it now or later or not at all.

This would be an upgrade from a $20 blade grinder.

“blade grinder”?

a !60$ burr grinder is not going to make that big of a difference if you are using a $40 press or moka pot. Thats not real espresso so the grind isn’t that important. Sorry. If you are that into coffee invest in a really good espresso maker, like a lapavoni, something that makes proper restaurant quality espresso. then worry about the grinder.

Can you afford it? Are all your credit cards paid off? Do you have a ready savings of six-months’ worth of expenses? How’s your retirement savings? It seems to me that if those are all in order, then you might consider it.

@trailsillustrated, yeah, that’s kind of what I was wondering about and where my knowledge is limited. I was trying to solve the problem of needing different grind sizes, but it sounds like it’s a moot issue without more investment (which I’m not pursuing anytime soon).

So what, then, is the equivalent step up for French press?

You can go on ebay sometimes and get a proper espresso maker for what you what going to spend on a grinder. It will be older, and its not a thing you put water into and boom your coffees done. You have to pull it like a barista so if you work in the morning, well it takes time.

Just get it and name it the Hawaii Jake. You’ll always appreciate it.
