Displaying dates on a PC using excel 2010 to create charts and graphs?

I am trying to create charts and graphs using excel 2101 on a PC. I want the charts to display only those dates for which I have data. The default is displaying all the dates between.
Example:
I have data for sept 3,5,9th I want to display data points on a line graph. The default is displaying sept,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and placing the data correctly but including blank dates as well. This is making the graph far too long. I want to show only those dates where there is a data point. Does any one know how to change the settings to show only those dates you enter?

Never mind. I figured it out. If anyone else needs to know this is how you do it:
you must enter the date in a different format.
I originally entered the date by writing September 1 etc the computer changed it to 09/01/2011. this method autocreates ranges.
I changed it and entered 9/1 , 9/5 etc and this resulted in a simple display of the dates I enetered only!
Thanks, I had followed this to find out for myself. Peculiar that the format of the date matters. XD
Actually I was only partially correct. This did work but it cuased yet another complication.
If you really want to know I will explain but its sort of complicated.
I had the dates doing down in column A and then I had different catagories going across columns b,c,d,e. Initially these columns as labled appeared in the legend (which I wanted). When i switched the format of the dates I also wrote the word Dates above the dates agacent to the catagory titles.
This entire set of changes (altering how I entered the dates and writing the word dates) resulted in the dates landing as i wanted yet the catagory labels disappeared from the legend and now the legend read; series 1, series 2, series 3 etc.
i could not get this to revert back to the actual column titles appearing in the legend without undoing the changes I was seeking in the date section. Very very weird!
If i took out the word date above the dates, this did result in the column titles once again appearing in the legen yet it changed the dates to weird numbers like 554078 for each…wow…
anyway i decided the dates entered correctky were mnore important and I decided I could always insert a text box to outline the legend (for now) but I really do need to figure out what’s going on1
Once the table looks like you want it to, can’t you simply edit the “series1”, “series2” titles to be what you want them to be? Some kind of “table format” section.. such as the one you get in the right click menu of the graph itself?
Hmm that was the plan, I ried adding tables but that made tables out of the data but didnt allow me to enter letters or words. I tried data labels but again only functioned with numbers. I labeled what I needed to on the graphs but i will tell you it is very frustrating. I need to figure out how to make dates appear as I enter them only and also to have legends with correct details. How do you edit the text in the legend? if i could do that then when it says series i could simply change that but i couldn’t find a function to do that
I am not familiar with the version of excel you are using, but there should be a tab at the top that is all about editing the table… or it should be in the right click context menu.. not sure..
when all else fails for me with excel i click on the little blue question mark button.. xD
I shall give both a try Thank you
