What if a totally new awesome jelly joined and went to chat- would you welcome them?

Asked by Dog (25152points) October 15th, 2011

Perhaps tonight a newbie was hanging out. How many of you would peek in and say “Hi”?

Certainly, welcome with open arms

linguaphile's avatar

Nope, only because I’m rarely, rarely ever in chat.

XOIIO's avatar

I’ve seen many, many newbies in chat. The rooms are empty otherwise though.

zensky's avatar

Sure. I was a n00b once too, you know. I don’t remember when – but I’m sure I was.

XOIIO's avatar

@zensky I think around 6 reincarnations ago, maybe 5.

Bellatrix's avatar

Sure I would @Dog. Happy to say hi to new people in chat. The only thing that would stop me is if I am working in between fluthering. Otherwise, bring on the newbies.

I am not very comfortable in chat mode. It goes to fast for me to track all of the conversations. I like building a relationship with people over time, and message boards help me do that.

LuckyGuy's avatar

I… don’t… type… fast… enough… for… chat.

Yes, I would like my sandwich with lettuce and mayo.
Wait. What were we talking about? I was still on the previous question.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Nope, as I never go to chat. I’ll wave from way over here.

chyna's avatar

I’m never in chat. But if they were in a thread I would.

Like @worriedguy I’m too slow to type and am usually 3 questions or discussions behind.

marinelife's avatar

Not me. I don’t hang out in Chat. I just don’t get it.

mangeons's avatar

I’m not allowed in Chat, so no, I wouldn’t. :-(

wundayatta's avatar

How would I even know someone new was there? I’d have to go check chat, which I never do. But even if I did check it, how would I know someone was new? And why would anyone, new or not, hang out in chat if no one was there? I certainly wouldn’t. If there was some notice on the top of the community feed that 5 people were in chat, I might check it out, but other than that, chat is only for special occasions where there seems to be a party.

Of course, I won’t go to just any party. There need to be people I know there. When I say “know” I don’t mean recognize their name; I mean someone I have had conversations with enough times to actually remember something about them. (I generally need to hear the same piece of information 5 times before it makes it to permanent memory).

Also, if it were a noob, how would I know they were totally awesome?

JLeslie's avatar

If chat said the number of people in chat on the home page, meaning a little number right next to where we click, then I would go into chat more.

cockswain's avatar

If I saw someone I thought was cool in there and had the time, I’d probably go chat with him/her.

Dog's avatar

Thanks to everyone who saw the post while the newbie was there and came in and welcomed them. Also thanks to all of you who welcomed them here! I bet they noticed!

You guys rock!

And thanks for cleaning up after yourselves in the chat room after I left! It looks pristine!

JilltheTooth's avatar

Oh, I thought the Q was asking for information, not an invite. Sorry.

JLeslie's avatar

Me too. I had no idea the newb was in chat right now.

gailcalled's avatar

I’d be happy to send a fruit basket.

SpatzieLover's avatar

Nope.
As a matter of fact, I’ve reported newbs that have gone straight to chat just to swear or post spam.

FutureMemory's avatar

I wonder how many people have figured out that when Dog posts a question about the chat room, it’s essentially her inviting people to come in to the chat right at that moment? :D

JLeslie's avatar

@FutureMemory Maybe she should write the date and time in the question and how long the person intends to hang out in chat?

Kardamom's avatar

I don’t go in the chat rooms. For me it just doesn’t make sense, it’s not like in real life if you were in a real room talking to real people, it doesn’t work the same way, I don’t care for it at all. I like the Q and A aspect of Fluther, but chat rooms in general really turn me off.

The only time I’ve ever been in a chat room is about a month ago when one of the Jellies was trying to set some record for most people in the chat room at once. I felt like a ping pong ball being swatted around and only ended up dizzy and my hands hurt from trying to type so fast, and really having no actual conversation. I just don’t get the interest of chat rooms.

Bellatrix's avatar

I like @JLeslie‘s idea of giving people posting in the main fluther section an indication of the number of people in chat (or even who is in chat). I think that might remind people who would chat to pop in and say hi. Wonder if that could be done?

bob_'s avatar

Nah, I’d be all “yo, give me your money, noob—and go make me a sandwich” ~

Berserker's avatar

Sure, it’s happened a few times. I scared the shit out of welcomed some newbies before.

augustlan's avatar

It would be great if there was an easy-to-see indicator of the number of people in chat. Or even the names of those in there at that moment.

wundayatta's avatar

@augustlan It sure would be nice if someone who had access to the founders’ ears would tell them about that innovation, don’t you think? ;-)

Blueroses's avatar

Welcome, new awesome Jelly! I’ll catch you next time. did you happen to find my earring while you were cleaning up in there?
