Which of the following actresses would be best to cast along with actor John Cusack in a period noir film: Penelope Cruz, Zhang Ziyi or Winona Ryder?
“Dark Is The Night”
Directed by Steven Spielberg (yes, I’m dreaming)
Its Los Angeles, 1939…
A curious private detective (John Cusack) trails and interrupts a personal attack of vengeance by a former silent film actress/femme-fatale with a heart (your choice of the three actresses), known publicly as the The Black Butterfly. After a few close encounters the two strangers helplessly fall in love, much to the chagrin of his manipulative former flame (Gwyneth Paltrow). While trying to survive an underestimating clash with the Butterfly’s target: a ruthless L.A. gangster (Mickey Roarke), representing the City of Angels, they both discover that a certain worldwide secret society that the gangster reports to is hiding a connection to the forming Nazi’s…and a future that will be seemingly controlled by the evil group.
Actor Ewan McGregor is a photojornanist nearly following the detective’s every move, putting himself also in further danger.

I vote for Penelope Cruz.
Oooh…very spicy, indeed. Can you guess who I picked, Bella? I suppose you would have no clue, huh? Oh well, worth a gander.
Anyone?
I will guess (and it is a total guess because I don’t know anything much about you) Zhang Ziyi. She is very, very pretty.
Hmm…not a bad choice. But wasn’t she the one that starred in My Bamboo, I Come For You. Lord knows, I don’t know the mandarin translation for the film either.
Penelope Cruz if you’re going for class.
Winona Ryder if you need just a smidge of bat-shit crazy.
Zhang Ziyi if you need a mysterious combination of both.
Silent film actress? Probably Ryder, but I would love to cast Cyndi Lauper.
Cyndi Lauper?! What the heck do you think she wants to do? I know, she’s gotta have fun, right? Right.
Of course you do, fann. Your funny.
I like that.
Oh, by the way, fann.
Cyndi Lauper. Sheesh.
Be Good 8^)
Winona Ryder…hmm.
I wonder what she would say?
My reasoning:
Silent film actresses had great faces, but usually had bad accents or terrible voices, and had trouble moving into sound pictures. Cyndi has that harsh New York accent, and, yes, she would be a lot of fun in that role.
Hmm…your reasoning is indeed, fascinating. But with Lauper in the film she would change the tone a bit. Again, not that it wouldn’t be fun.
I suppose I should just be quiet.
Ms. Ryder had me at. . .well, let’s just say she had me. Yep.
Zhang Ziyi, because Eastern Asian women are SO fine!
