Can I use a hand-made quilt as a blanket?

Asked by LC_Beta (1883points) October 16th, 2011 from iPhone

This is an embarrassing question, but I can’t ask the only expert I know! A family member made me and my husband a beautiful quilt. Is it appropriate to use it as a blanket on our bed or will that damage it? I don’t have any wall to hang it up on, though I do think it’s a work of art. She says it’s machine washable. I’d appreciate the fluther community’s opinions!

That is what quilts are for. :D But if you have kids or pets or a penchant for having Italianesque dinners in bed, I’d recommend taking steps to keep it clean. Scotchguard might be a good idea.

Of course! If you have a dog that sleeps on your bed I would suggest you put a sheet over it at night though. :-)

We have several quilts made by my grandmother that we use to keep us warm. Some are close to 50 years old. All are in great shape.

We have several hand made quilts either handed down or purchased. While we use them once in a while, we don’t keep them on the bet. With the kids and critters climbing on our bed, they would be torn up pretty quickly.

Yes that is what they are made for.
Of course as said above, keep any pets or messy children off of it.

Yep. I have a handmade one over the store bought one on my bed right now. I toss both into the washer and dryer. I think that’s one of the best things about quilts…You can wash & dry them easily and use them for decades.

You can use it as a blanket, but it will wear over time. I wish I could show you a before and after view of my daughters baby quilt. It is so fragile now, you couldn’t even use it for another quilt. She’s only 15. I would not say they would necessarily stand up to decades of use.
