How can I fix my Mac's internal speaker volume button?

Asked by xTheDreamer (897points) October 17th, 2011

I’m having a problem here, there was a day I plugged in my headphones into my Macbook Pro and when I unplugged it my Macbook Pro’s volume button isn’t working how it’s suppose to.
I have to go to Preferences > Sound and then adjust the volume from there and this is still happening. The only time the internal speakers volume button is working like normal is only when I restart my Macbook and that’s just a nuisance to restart it every single time.

So I was wondering what’s wrong with it and how can I fix this problem?

Try plugging the headphones back in, if they (and the volume) work the system might think they’re plugged in even when they aren’t. There are some pins in there that detect the plug, sometimes a couple tries plugging the headphones in and removing them gets the pins back in order.

You can also try resetting the PRAM. Shut down, turn on the system and, before the grey screen pops up, press and hold down Command, Option, P, R. Keep holding until you hear the startup chime the second time.
