How Do I Do A Tune Up?

Asked by usaloveorleaveit (163points) October 18th, 2011

I have a 2000 Toyota Tacoma 2.4L that I need a tune up on. Can you please give me instructions on all the things I need to check or replace?

Please, I know I can have the dealer or a mechanic shop do it so please don’t respond with a dumb answer like that. I wanna do it myself. Thanks.

This is where a Chilton manual comes in handy.

I cannot give specific instructions as your truck is very different from my ‘85 Corolla; you won’t have to adjust your carburetor like I do, and you probably have hydraulic lifters, so valve lash probably isn’t an issue either.

I would recommend going to your local library (or auto parts store) and borrowing/buying the Chilton book for your truck. It will have all of the vehicle-specific stuff in there.

To my recollection you need to replace the spark plugs. My dad showed me one time and you need a wrench to undo them this explains it well
Good luck!

The manual that comes with the vehicle will give you the maintenance schedule to follow. From there you can pretty much read how to, or youtube how to do any of the services.

If you don’t have the original manual, go online, or go to the dealership and get it.

You can also go to almost any autoparts store and get an EXTENSIVE guide for almost any vehicle which has ridiculously detailed diagrams and instructions on how to do everything you need.

Any more info than that and what you’re asking us to do is everything but the manual labor for you, LOL

But seriously, the maintenance schedule that came with your owners manual can truly be everything you need.

@Meego That’s part of it, but there is far more. Belt inspections for one. I have it a little harder since carbs and distributors require more attention than injectors and electronic ignition, but I don’t have a transfer case, so it’s simpler than a 4WD.

Check and see if your local high school or junior college has adult car maintenance classes.
