Watching and listening to younger people makes me feel old; why doesn't watching old people make me feel young?

because you probably are able to relate with them?
I don’t know how old you are. But it could be because you are not young. But talking to younger people should at least make you feel useful and wise.
Watching younger people makes me feel old and watching older people makes me feel old, but younger than they are. I think when you reach whatever age that body parts start to hurt, the ability to resonate with the hurt in others can make you wince with recognition.
Such a great intro to chatting about your decade of life zensky! Young people have such a new world around them and way too much info. Old people are more sobering because they draw out the back to the future in us.
When you are heading for less rather than more the direction of your yearning is the true vantage point. Got it? lol
Cause you can remember that you were young once, but you can’t remember that you were old(er) once?
Because that’s where you’re going and not where you’ve been.
For my part, watching older people reminds me to be thankful every day for what I can still do. I can’t remember what it was like when nothing hurt, but I can still get across a room under my own power, and that, my dears, is a major, major blessing.
I think it’s because of shared experience/memory.
I don’t feel old when I am around younger people until I realize they are missing any knowledge or exposure to what I consider an important even that happened before they were born.
I am in the stock exchange business; 24 years ago was the crash of ‘87. That week was horrendous for anyone that was in the business at the time, and pretty scary for the whole U.S. When I mentioned it today, the general response from those younger than 40 was a general “huh?”. That made me feel old.
But when I am around older people, we share that collective memory, so we seem to be more contemporary.
@zenvelo
Haha…hey have any hot stocks you’d like to share?
Is it time to invest in home medical supplies? LOL
If you join the geriatric olympics as a speed walker walker, you’ll understand.
I think it depends on what the younger people and I are doing as to whether it makes me feel old. In business, I am constantly talking with resource people who are younger than I. A lot younger, like my kids’ ages, or even younger. I never feel old with them. I feel like we are all about the same age (just my perception, of course). However, if it turns from business during the day to dinner and drinks in the evening, I feel much older. I just want to go home or get back to the room if I’m traveling. Peace and quiet. But it could be I’ve always been that way.
If I am around my kids, especially my son, who is quite considerate of me, I tend to feel older. I enjoy his attention and consideration, but also makes me want to arm wrestle him just to prove something. Haven’t tried that yet.
If I am around people who are quite a bit older and perhaps in declining health, then I feel younger.
I don’t even think about it, I just go with the flow.
Admittedly my “motherly” side comes out and I often am compelled to tuck in portruding tags on young mens clothing. haha
My body may be aging but I am the eternal child, always laughing, always curious. Whoever ends up being my caretaker will really enjoy me, even when I’m 101.
;-D
I know “old” people that can run your socks off, old man @zensky. You are just hanging out with the wrong crowd, Baby. ; )
Very little makes me feel old, as long as I am already out of the chair, off the couch, out of bed – you get the idea – and mobile. It’s that first step sometimes that reminds me that it’s been half a century since I used to play baseball on a paved road… and used to slide into second base anyway. Sometimes I can’t believe that I used to be so reckless with this fragile body. Other times I’m amazed that with behavior like that I’ve still managed to live this long. I never expected to live past 35.
So far, so good.
PS: Every ‘first kiss’ makes me feel 16 again. This time without acne, braces or much of any concern about whether this is a good hair day.
You must be hanging out in the wrong places.
Both sets of my grandparents used to come home from errands around town and say “Ugh! All the old people were out today!”. -
My grandparents were all in their late 70’s through 90’s when saying this
Go to a grocery store on a weekday when they give out free samples…I have it on good authority that is when you will see all the old people.
Free samples of what? I don’t know about this. Maybe I’m not old enough?
@bkcunningham Calling me Old man Zensky doesn’t exactly make me feel any younger. Just saying.
;-)
@zensky
Better than grumpy old man or curmudgeon!
Don’t forget to adjust your grooming habits and keep that ear & nose hair under control and pay close attention if your eyebrows start fusing together into a unibrow. lol
I’ve been told that unibrows are sexy. It’s possible I misheard as the hair in my ears can be overwhelming.
@Jeruba They give out new foods to try. Sometimes the butcher will make cuts of meat that are on special. Essentially it’s the day they hawk their goods to the old people.
Often this is in conjunction with the “55 & older” double coupon day.
Unibrows are sexy? Geez, you are older than I thought. loljkbk
Because you see your future…..I know exactly what you’re saying, too.
