What is the headline news where you are right now?

Asked by zensky (13421points) October 20th, 2011

This thread won’t be topical for very long – but if enough jellies respond within the next 24 hours – we should get a glimpse of what’s happening in, and outside, our fluther world.

I’ll start: it’s Gilad Schalit all day, every day. It’s practically a national holiday – even 48 hours after his release.

You have picked a bad time to ask this question, you might not get much variety as I just heard that Gaddafi has been captured and possibly killed (BBC). Gilad Shalit was also a major story here yesterday and the day before.

Gadafi captured in Libya, animals on the loose in Ohio, and trying to repair a sewer treatment plant in Johnson City that was completely destroyed in the flooding last month.

“Gadhafi Captured in Sirte”, “Clinton: Pakistan must do more against terrorists”, are the top two with “Greek bailout not enough” and “Egypt corruption cases has US roots” tying for third.

Yesterday was “Perry Promoting Flat Tax” and “Escaped Animals in Ohio”.

On my local news channel right now:

Fish and Wildlife trying to restrict boating speed in a bay in Crystal River in order to protect manatees.

Of course, people are up in arms because apparently a speed limit would mean people would take their boating businesses elsewhere. Whatever.

Oh, and some places want to make it legal to drive golf carts on the street. As if old people don’t cause enough traffic issues.

Tampa might have $100 Million for a new Rays stadium. Y’know, but it’s now illegal for homeless people to panhandle for money to eat and find shelter for the night. (Even homeless shelters here have a $15+ charge per person)

Well, I don’t specifically sit down to watch the news or read the paper but from what I can tell it’s all about The Queen’s visit and how the Prime Minister didn’t curtsey. Psh.

I have no idea, I don’t pay any attention to the media.
My little town is settling into ghost season after the wave of white water rafters have wound down and our river is, once again, empty after the summer season.
As far as local headlines, well, it’s harvest and crush time in my wine producing county and our big ” Apple Hill” harvest season is underway with more than 50 ranches and 100’s of vineyards kicking ass on this years bountiful harvest.

People come from miles around to partake in my counties harvest festivities. :-)

Highway 101 closed because of Fuel Spill

In Northern California, traffic messes trump just about everything.

@erichw1504 How weird is that I know the area pretty well. The pictures brought back old memories. Although not of naked men at weddings. But there was a nude swimming hole not far from there.

ANWR’s future is debated here. Well, this is interesting and relevant to the rest of the country and not just to my current city: http://www.newsminer.com/view/full_story/16109854/article-Hundreds-show-up-at-Fairbanks-open-comment-on-ANWR?instance=home_news_window_left_top_2 . BTW, in case you were wondering, yes it is a little cold here.
