Why can I not install MS SQL Server Express 2008 R2?

I’ve installed Visual Studio 2008 SP1 (an apparent requirement for the installation of MSSQL Server Express 2008 R2), but I still can’t continue with the installation of MSSQL due to it failing the SP1 check.
I had the same SQL Server edition running fine not six months ago but had to uninstall; what could have gone wrong between then and now, and how can I fix this?

Please provide details on what and how it fails the precheck.
Ya, as blueiznh wrote, it’s hard to know without more info about the reported error. So I don’t know. I have installed it ok several times, including on a machine with Visual Studio 2008 SP1. The MS forums would be a good place to ask.
Oh, and is there really a Visual Studio requirement? I have a client who has installed SQL Server 2008 R2 on two computers, neither of which do I think has any Visual Studio on it at all.
What: Fails the Visual Studio SP1 check (it was in the original question =1)
How: As far as I could find out, the SQL Server installer was looking in the wrong place for the registry value that denotes a successful installation of Visual Studio SP1 (or the registry value hadn’t been placed, I don’t know).
Zaku – Apparently so. I was a little surprised as I too was able to install SQL Server 2008 R2 on my desktop 6 months ago, and that certainly didn’t have Visual Studio installed.
Fix: Not the most glamorous way to go about it, but seeing as none of the suggestions on the kb article for it worked I ended up following this command-prompt based fix
