What's happening at night at this house? (See details)

Asked by sliceswiththings (11723points) October 21st, 2011

Sorry for the vague question…my boyfriend is staying at a friend’s house while his house is under renovation. Two strange things are happening whenever I stay over there, and I’m hoping anyone has an idea for the cause:

1. I can’t sleep. I know it’s not simply being away from my own bed or having another body there, since I do those things all the time and I’m usually a really good sleeper.

2. Mysterious bites! Last week I woke up with a bunch of bumps (I assume bites) on my right foot and ankle. This morning I woke up with a new batch on my right side. My boyfriend is totally un-afflicted (by the bites, he can never sleep anywhere).

Thanks for any clues!

Other details: there are no annoying noises or lights, nor are there pets that could bring in fleas.

Bed Bugs?

Fleas? They don’t like everybody. They’re hard to see. The bites itch like crazy.

@blueiiznh & @SpatzieLover , hold my two guesses.

Like @Sunny2, my first thought was flea bites. Not a pleasant picture, but maybe helpful.

My money’s on bedbugs. We’ve been fighting a very small infestation that we brought back from a stay in a state park cabin.

I think we’ve got ‘em whooped, but it took us awhile to figure out what was going on. If it were still summer, we’d have assumed they were mosquito bites (very itchy). I never felt the bites actually happen. Besides the fact that it happens at night, they inject an anesthetic that numbs the site. The bites often don’t itch until a day or two later. If they live in some part of the bed over on your side, they’ll just stop when they get to you and won’t bother your partner. I only got bitten on my right side, because that’s where the edge of our bed is.

If you go looking, they leave plenty of traces. Strip the bed and go hunting.

Whatever it is, you need to NOT SLEEP THERE until it is eradicated.

And not bring it home to your bed

Try switching the sides you sleep on and see if he gets bitten then?

But that’s just fooling around when in reality the priority is to keep that sh!t from coming home with you into your own bed! Stay awaaay, these (bedbugs/fleas) are a major scourge to get rid of and will make you mentally unhinged if given half a chance. Fleas lay eggs under the baseboards of your walls and in the carpet and they multiply like heck, and the eggs can incubate for up to a year before hatching. Been there with fleas and have had to vacuum on my hands and knees around the bases of the walls twice a day, every day, for 14 months. Had to throw out lots of things too.

Don’t let this happen to you, it’s a huge nightmare and in the case of fleas the bites can make some people sick. I’ve heard bed bugs are even worse… wanders away shuddering at the memories…

I know of another couple who were similarly afflicted by bed bugs… she reacted to the bites, he did not at all. Consequently, it took a long time for him to believe that there was a problem. It’s lucky they didn’t manage to spread to her bed in the meantime. Be careful! They are a pain to get rid of.

sounds like bed bugs.

Just wash the sheets and bedding in hot water and bleach (if possible) and see if that solves the problem.

Generally speaking, bed bugs and fleas are dangerous, just annoying and itchy.

marinelife's avatar

@Dutchess_III That will not solve the problem if it is bedbugs. They infest the mattress or other places in the house.
