What do you think of this television program format (which involves dogs)

Asked by rebbel (35553points) October 25th, 2011

This week a new tv show will air on the Dutch television we get bombarded with teasers the last days.
A family (with children) are going to take a dog from an animal shelter.
They will get six dogs visting them in their house and in a week time they have to send four away that will be decided after the dogs have to show their character, their behaviour, interaction, etc..
Then, from the two remaining dogs the family will choose the ‘winner’.
That describes the teaser that we are shown.
What are your first thoughts on this format?

That seems to be the only format TV producers can come up with these days – whether the contestents are fatties, fashion designers, survivors or dogs. Booorrring – and this case, really unfair to the dogs.

My thoughts too, @janbb, but I also thought it a bit unfair to the children (seeing that kids attach to pets pretty quickly).

Oh true – I didn’t even think about the kids as well.

Clearly these idiotic shows have huge audience. That’s sad…

Why is this idiotic? They get a chance to see what dog suits the family better.

Its a buildup to a letdown for the dogs. I give it thumbs down.

Dogs have feelings just like humans. You can really tell when they are sad, when thier ears are folded back.

I guess if instead of dogs, they would choose kids from the orphanage, that will be cruel. One may argue hey, at least one of them would be adopted. Yet, exposing those kids who would lose in this pathetic competition is undoubtedly, inhumane.

This human format would never end up on TV, but with dogs? Well, indeedy, yes! They’re just animals who are going to die anyway so what’s wrong with saving one and broadcast the whole seemingly heroic process. And the producers make some money. And the loser dogs go to the pound to die.

( Whoever thought of this concept is not stupid, just heartless. )

(I do have a sort of comical image of the dogs who are eliminated talking to the camera and complaining about how they are really much better than Blackie at fetching.)

Thank you guys, for your thoughts.
After the teasers I went to find some more info on the show.
On a dog lovers forum I read that (at least) two other shelters were asked to join and give dogs for the program, but they declined because the producers were only looking for small(ish) dogs, that were child-friendly, sweet and well-behaving.
The shelters’ reply was that they don’t have problems to ‘get rid’ don’t know a sufficient word for it of these kind of dogs as most people who come to the shelter for a dog are looking for exactly those dogs.
The ‘problematic’ dogs are the dogs that are big, have health troubles and behaviour troubles.
My thoughts are that this show is purely made for viewing figures (read: money).
It sounds to me as pretty tasteless, but I will give it one try to proof me wrong.

@janbb That is a brilliant and funny fantasy by the way, about the commenting dogs!

janbb's avatar

Yeah – it would almost make the show worth doing if they could do it as a parody of other reality tv series.

I can’t wait to NOT watch it. Bore Fest!

Sounds like re-runs of Sex & The City to me, i’d give it a miss.

It sounds unfair to the dogs to be honest, taking on the dogs when they know they will be sending some back to the shelter. I don’t think anyone should take on a rescue animal with the intention of sending it back to the shelter, I understand that some people take on animals with good intentions but it doesn’t work out for whatever reason and they have to send them back to the shelter but to deliberately take on an animal to send it back is shitty in my opinion. They are using dogs that are in need of a loving home to make money which also sounds shitty.
