How do I keep a bed that is on wheels from rolling away?

Asked by dappled_leaves (15898points) October 26th, 2011

Ok, jellies – this is driving me quite insane. I am staying with friends, and they have me in a guest room on a bed that has wheels. I am grateful for their hospitality, don’t get me wrong… but I am very much a “sit up and read in bed before going to sleep” kind of person, and whenever I try to do that, the bed starts rolling away from the headboard, to which it is not attached. Does anyone know of a solution to this? It clearly can’t be a permanent one.

What kind of surface is the bed sitting on? Wood, carpet, tile?

Perhaps a rolled up sock stuffed in front of each wheel?
If on carpet could you find a brick or something similar to put in front of at least one wheel?

They have little rubber ‘boxes’ (really shallow boxes) that you can put under the wheels, if it’s on a hard surface. You can buy them at the hardware store. If you’re not looking to spend any money, you’re going to need to ‘chock’ the wheels with something. Preferably something with a wedge shape, like on of those things you use to keep a door open.

The boxes @augustlan suggests are cheap.

Buy 4 of those rubber door stops and position them under the wheels which you are visiting them. When you leave take them with you if your hosts do not appreciate you leaving them there.

@WestRiverrat It’s on wood.
@wilma I like it. I’ll try that now.
@augustlan It’s already on those, but the bed is so light – whenever I begin to prop myself up, it just rolls off the boxes. Maybe that’s why they’re cheap?
@Dr_Lawrence I’ll see how the socks go for tonight, then maybe make a shopping trip tomorrow!

Thanks all!

Put a heavy object against the end of it, where your feet go. Like a big chair, a big box full of crap or something like that, if it’s available. If the wheel boxes don’t work and you don’t wanna/can’t unscrew the wheels off, that’s the best I can suggest. :/

@dappled_leaves Then don’t use you my suggestion, it would scratch up the finish on the floor.

Get 4 scrap pieces of 2×4 to prop the bed up on so the wheels are off the floor. Or if the coasters under the bed posts are loose, you could try pulling them off and put them back on when you leave.

Take off the wheels.

@CWOTUS Pretty sure that’s not gonna fly in this house.

The socks are working. Repeat: the socks are working. @wilma you are my hero.

Yay!
I hope you enjoy your book and goodnight, sweet dreams.

Why not stick a chuck under the front wheels, get some scrap wood from a lumberyard, they always have corners.

Wedges! Match books will do. Wedge one under each wheel.
