Whats a fun thing i can do to ease boredom?

Asked by Mtl_zack (6781points) May 12th, 2008

ive just discovered that the internet isnt really that entertaining. all there is is information games and porn. for information, you need a subject to look up, and i cant think of anything. as for games, i hate the 2 second, repetitive type, and as for porn, its everywhere and i try to avoid it.
by the way, i live far from my friends so preferably something alone. also, dont suggest reading. i already thought of that, and i get distracted too easily by my dog, who is very hyper.

Play an instrument.
Video Games.
Pray.
Surf eBay for something you want to buy but can’t. See what kind of deals there are.

Do something with your hyper dog. Go for a walk/ run with him. Play with him. Give him a bath. Take him to a dog park. Take him to a pet store and buy him a toy.
You could do something around your house like clean out your closet. See what crap you could get rid of. Go through your clothes, get rid of ones you dont like or are torn. Then figure out what you need more of and surf the Internet for that.

Try signing up on StumbleUpon. Create your profile and interests, and then click the widget and they will show you sites in the areas of interest you have described.

Try doing some writing. A blog, A story.

I almost never find nature boring.

i forgot to mention: i dont have my drivers license.
@babyrurtle: ive already looked at all my childhood crap that i made. some of it is being laminated. and if anything, i have too few clothes, to clean up.
@marina: great idea about writing. as for nature, i could do some more hikes. and maybe i could workout more. maybe i could hike and then when i reach my destination, ill work out.

Like Marina said Stumble is great when you dont know what you want to look at. Just put in what you like and you’ll almost always find something really cool. Like i just found this the other day.

If you are bored…then learn about boredom! According to Wikipedia.org:

“Although it has not been widely studied, research on boredom suggests that boredom is a major factor impacting diverse areas of a person’s life. People ranked low on a boredom-proneness scale were found to have better performance in a wide variety of aspects of their lives, including career, education, and autonomy.[15]

Boredom can be a symptom of clinical depression. Boredom can be a form of learned helplessness, a phenomenon closely related to depression. Some philosophies of parenting propose that if children are raised in an environment devoid of stimuli, and are not allowed or encouraged to interact with their environment, they will fail to develop the mental capacities to do so.

In a learning environment, a common cause of boredom is lack of understanding; for instance, if one is not following or connecting to the material in a class or lecture, it will usually seem boring. However, the opposite can also be true; something that is too easily understood, simple or transparent, can also be boring. Boredom is often inversely related to learning, and in school it may be a sign that a student is not challenged enough (or too challenged). An activity that is predictable to the students is likely to bore them. [16]

Boredom has been studied as being related to drug abuse among teens. [17]

Boredom has been proposed as a cause of pathological gambling behavior. A study found results consistent with the hypothesis that pathological gamblers seek stimulation to avoid states of boredom and depression.[18]”

Set a goal based on your interests. Write down your goal and set out to obtain that goal. When you get bored…..concentrate on the things that will help you achieve the goal.

When I get bored I usually ride my skateboard or play basketball by myself at the local elementary school. I’m 30 if that helps put things in perspective.

Stop having boring thoughts. Have only interesting thoughts. Go into the forest and sit by a tree and keep thinking until your thoughts are not boring anymore. Keep going back to the tree every chance you get and stay there all day. Sooner or later all boring thoughts will stop & all your thoughts will be interesting.

Do you have a camera?
Go out for a walk and snap the things that catch your eye. When you get back you can upload, organise and edit those snaps…......boredom gone!

Be careful, my gramps used to say that boredom was the devils playground, then again he drank like Hemingway, and kind of looked like him too.

draw a comic about your life. it doesn’t matter how boring you think your life is or how bad of an artist you think you are. even really mundane experiences can make for interesting art – just show how your mind works.

other ideas: sand and paint a piece of furniture. plant some seeds. cook something you’ve never made before. write a letter to someone who lives far away. meditate. hum random notes until it starts to make a pattern and see if you can turn it into a song. play solitaire with actual playing cards. research your astrological chart. sew patches on your jacket. stretch. take a bath.

raquetball + wall = hours of fun, good cardio depending on how intensely you play

even if you don’t own a raquet you can play handball with it

Any hobby that interests you and you can actively engage in to pass the time. Ask yourself what interests you, and then seek out a club or hobby that promotes that interest.
