Just a quick question about moderation; what is ''obscene''?

So I saw a question where an answer had been removed, because it was obscene. That’s the first time I see that as a reason for removing an answer. Although I can easily imagine, what exactly does ’‘obscene’’ entail? What does one have to post to get that? (not that I’m planning on getting it)
Please notice, I’m not asking this in order to whine about moderation, not for a second. I’m just really curious about obscene since I never saw it before, and I also thought it was kinda funny. XD

Maybe saying something like ’you’re a fucking idiot’. Which is obscene and a personal attack.
Justice Stewart Potter said it best:
” I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description [“hard-core pornography”]; and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it…”
My hunch is that that Fluther mods are starting to crack down on NSFW content because of the Google issue.
It probably would have been quicker as an answer if @everephebe had simply pointed you to this post of Auggie’s in that first thread he referenced.
@JilltheTooth Ah, cool. I would have searched harder had I known this was already discussed lol.
Ahhhh I think I know what quip you are referring to, since I was the mod.
Sometimes the choices for removal are not adequate and we just have to pick something that is remotely close.
That particular quip was more offensive than obscene, but we do not have an “offensive” choice. It was written in such a way that it was a slam against a segment of the population (which the user later apologized for)
But usually “Obscene” is saved for what has been linked to above. And we have had to use it legitimately many times.
Anything that offends the majority of people, like an answer about a good way to rape and kill women and babies. Something that is hateful and directed personally, like “You are nothing but a faggot and I’m gonna kill you.” I think anything like that is obscene and grounds for removal. It goes against the majority’s moral sense, the moral sense we need to operate and get along as civilized human beings in safe, orderly society.
@Dog So Obscene is used when the offense doesn’t quite apply to every other category that Fluther considers offensive, or guideline breaking and whatnot?
So it’s not related but I gotta question…what if like, I flamed my own self. Say I went; @Symbeline… and then started severely flaming or insulting myself? Would it be deleted for being totally off topic, random…or obscene? Or what else? Would it be deleted at all?
@Symbeline I would remove it for “Personal Attack” because that would fit intensely well. ;)
Actually I have removed self-attacks for that reason.
Really? There have been actual self attacks on here? That’s so weird…
I tried the self experiment on GameFAQ’s before, but they filter out words like fuck or bitch, and that’s how things are moderated. Nobody actually reads the post, it’s automatically deleted if it has a word the site disallows. (didn’t know this when trying it though)
Serious self attacks that aren’t jokes or experiments though…never saw that. So weird. :/
As a mod you see a lot of strange stuff. :)
Yeah, prolly…cool avatar lol. :)
