Does carving a pumpkin and scoooping out the seeds upset your stomach?

I am not bothered at all. But, one family member is and occasionally is overcome with waves of nausea.
If you are affected, what is it about hte act that bothers you? Is it the smell, the texture, the idea of it?
In one pre-kindergarten class they have noted that it is pretty much guaranteed at least one child in the class with throw up when they carve a pumpkin as a Halloween activity. That indicates to me there must be something more to it than a purely psychosomatic reaction. What is it?

Maybe it’s a combination of the smell and the way it sort of looks and feels like guts? It might be more subconscious, but it is like you’re scooping guts out of a body. It can even look like vomit if you put your mind to it. And the way it feels is all gushy and gross.
Personally I love it, I’m just theorizin’...
Not me. I can’t remember ever seeing someone respond that way, but I guess it could be seen as kind of gross. Personally, it’s my favourite thing about pumpkins. It’s so fun.
Gooey pumpkin slime I could see being a bit overpowering to someone….let me serve them some roasted and salted pumpkin seeds to bring them back around!
I’m hoping there is someone in the collective (and willing to admit it) that goes “Erp” when they see the seeds flop onto the newspaper covered counter.
If one preschooler in 25 acts has that trait, maybe the rates are similar or slightly lower in adults.
Not at all. (But if I was I would avoid the act.)
I think there are some people who are very sensitive to strong smells in general, and they absolutely hate the smell of raw pumpkins. I think @mangeons said that she hates the smell of pumpkins on @hawaiijake’s Q from today about the last time you carved a pumpkin. And I do believe that eating raw pumpkin can give you a tummy ache, but I’m not positive about that. Raw pumpkin doesn’t taste good, so I’ve never eaten very much, although I have in fact tasted it. Cooked pumpkin, on the other hand is one of the 7 Wonders of the food world : )
Those poor people, and thankfully I’m not one of them, can be easily brought to nausea by the scent of a pumpkin. With little kids, and some adults, the scent of vomit itself, can cause them to vomit, even if the pumpkin smell was not the cause of their problem in the first place.
And then some people, usually those that don’t like to touch “icky things” such as worms or snails, might also be effected by the slimy feel of the guts of the pumpkins and their seeds.
I love the whole experience of carving and scooping and smelling pumpkins. To me they are synonymous with Autumn and Halloween and the coming of Thanksgiving.
I will be roasting pumpkin seeds tonight!
No but the family member may think of it as if someone is scraping out it’s BRAINS.
nope i like to pull out the pumpkin guts with my hands. it feels cool and smells great!
The scraping has never bothered me, I love carving Jack-O-Lanterns, but, the SMELL of the pumpkin guts is not a smell I enjoy, honestly, it smells like birth to me. Really! I know, kinda strange, but, that’s what it smells like to me.
Yikes, Coloma. I’ve never smelled birth. Too caught up in the moment? lol
I can see the slimey part bothering people and maybe even the smell, but I don’t have a problem with the whole process. For some reason though, (probably due to an allergy) my hands break out in a bit of a rash and itch when my hands are covered with the stuff. The same as when I have peel and eat shrimp. Seems to clear up as soon as I wash my hands though. I never knew people got sick from the guts of pumpkins. Interesting.
Some people are sensitive to smells, and pumpkin has a strong, pungent odor.
