What are some things that you are shocked to hear some people don't like?

Asked by J0E (13172points) October 30th, 2011

It’s not really shocking to hear someone say “I don’t like deep fried alpaca eyes.” But some things are so commonly enjoyed that it’s shocking when someone doesn’t like them. For example, cake.

I am always shocked when someone tells me they do not like to read.

People act like I have two heads when I tell them I cannot stand chocolate.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

Rarely am I shocked, let’s just say that. I am shocked when people say they will never like something since how could they possibly know that?

I’m always shocked (and thrilled) when I meet someone who doesn’t like chocolate, ranch dressing, pizza, cheese, french fries and all the other utterly, thoroughly ubiquitous staples that bombard us everyday. I almost feel forced to like these things because of the dearth of other options.

To be honest, I’m shocked more often by people who like the same things I do!!

Air. They complain that if there weren’t any air, there’d be no wind to muss their hair. To those fools I say, winds may blow, but vacuums suck!

This question was inspired by Allie, wasn’t it?

Ice cream.

I hate when people get really aggressive when I confess that I don’t like peppers. It’s not a choice I’m making! Do they think I enjoy picking them out of so many foods? I would much rather love them!
I know that doesn’t answer the question. Had to vent.

Vanilla or chocolate ice cream.
Chocolate anything
bananas
all fruits as a group
water
potatoes
rice

Mariah's avatar

I’m shocked not by individuals’ dislike, but by how large of a percentage of people dislike math.

Sex

@sliceswiththings I’m the same with bananas and avocados. I absolutely love the taste of them, but if I eat them I end up in bed for 4 hours with the worst stomach cramps. :(

martianspringtime's avatar

tomatoes
ice cream
peanut butter

i personally am not a big fan of pizza, which a lot of people find shocking.

I’ve noticed a lot of people don’t like whiskey…you have to agree that’s weird.

jonsblond's avatar

@bobby78 whiskey is nasty and makes me puke. call me crazy! ;)

I’m shocked when people say they don’t like Obama.
I’m shocked that some people dislike musical theater.
I’m shocked when women refuse to have sex with me. ( Hee hee )

I can’t really think of anything or anytime off the top of my head when I was shocked by someone not liking something. People have different tastes and experiences, even strange phobias about things. Though I do remember being shocked when I found out a friend of mine didn’t know how to swim. I know it’s a learned skill, but I’ve been swimming since I was practically a baby so it seems as natural to me as walking or talking, so someone not knowing how to swim seems almost unnatural to me.

bob_'s avatar

@jonsblond So does whiskey XD

jonsblond's avatar

@bob_ at least I can remember my interesting. :P

lillycoyote's avatar

The only other thing I’ve got is I do remember other people being shocked to find out that I not only didn’t I like the movie Forrest Gump, I pretty much detested it; I thought it was horrible, on a number of levels. That was really shocking to some people.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

I’m shocked if someone says they don’t like babies, cheese or the beach.

Sunny2's avatar

I’m shocked by people not liking mushrooms, olives, cheese or, especially, chocolate. It really startled me when a friend said she didn’t understand why everybody loved chocolate so much.

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

I am shocked to hear when some people say they don’t like Brylcreem. I hate the “dry look” . Personally, a little dab makes my hair nice and shiny. It doesn’t leave a guy with greasy hair. It makes him look shiny and new.

I’m shocked to hear when some people say they don’t like cats and/or dogs. I love them!!

I’m shocked to hear when some people say they hate trees. They add beauty to the earth, clean the air, and generate oxygen.

I’m shocked to hear when some people say they don’t like carbohydrate-rich foods like noodles. Where do they get their energy? Lol.

I’m shocked to hear when some people say they’re against old-fashioned values. I think there’s a lot of good in them.

Food:

Pizza (one of my best friends dislikes pizza and it kills me, because I love it and like to make it, and it’s really cheap and good at Costco for a huge single slice, I actually have culinary dreams about the mushroom pizza at CPK)

Cheese

Peanut Butter

Mexican Food

Onion Rings

Strawberries

Potato Salad

Nachos

Nuts of any kind

Pumpkin Pie

Garlic

Movies

Star Wars Episode IV (the original movie)

The Sound of Music

Lost in Translation

Almost anything by Alfred Hithcock

The original Willy Wonka (with Gene Wilder)

Television

M*A*S*H

NCIS

Any Rankin/Bass holiday special

Seinfeld

The original Star Trek series

Holidays

Christmas (if your family celebrates Christmas) What’s not to like about rum cake, sugar cookies, eggnog, cheese balls, Christmas trees with twinkling lights, pumpkin pie, shiny foil wrapping paper, red and green wrapped Hershey’s kisses, brass bands playing Christmas carols, acapella singing groups singing Christmas carols, bell ringers ringing Christmas carols, children’s choirs singing christmas carols, CD’s with Doris Day and Burl Ives singing Chirstmas carols, Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer and Charlie Brown and the Grinch and Chevy Chase on TV, and glittered pinecones and gingerbread and poinsettias?

Halloween. What’s not to like about spooky stuff, pumpkins, candy, cute little kids in costumes, candy, caramel apples, Halloween parties, Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin, candy, popcorn balls, fake cobwebs, movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas, candy, Halloween Carnivals or “Fall Festival,” dogs dressed up in costumes, corn mazes, pumpkin patches, candy and roasted pumpkin seeds?

Music

U2

The Beatles

Bagpipes

Swing (big band) music

Glee (some people are so afraid of, or disgusted by the fact that they might have to endure someone who is gay, that they have completely written off this creative and original show).

Entities

Animals (I realize that some people are afraid of animals, usually due to an early childhood traumatization, but to dislike or hate them seems to be really extreme and troubling to me. I can’t imagine living in a world where I didn’t interact with animals and care for them and love them and try to make the world a better place for them). Snakes and spiders and worms and snails are a little bit creepy and scary to me, but I would never purposely kill them. I have gone to great lengthts to remove these kinds of critters from inside of my house or my garden, without hurting them, to return them to their native habitats (outside of my house and flower beds).

Family (I have a pretty close knit immediate family and large extended family. We all seem to like each other and enjoy each other’s company. It pains me to hear that other people can’t stand to be in the same room with their family members)

Activities

The Movies (one of my aunts has a weird nebulous story about being dragged to see Westerns during the 50’s. She claims that ever since then, she has hated movies) I just don’t kinow how to react to that comment, considering that there’s many different genres of movies, mostly not westerns that have come out since the 1950’s. But she’s adamant that she has no interest in checking out any movies.

Sunday Drives (I’ve seen some of the most beautiful locales and interesting places, within 2 hours of my town, on regular Sunday drives).

Reading the newspaper or watching the news on TV. Some people claim that the news is just a bunch of bad news, which may be true, but if your’e not prepared for what’s coming down the pike, the news is going to be even sadder. Especially when you’re one of the ignorant people who never saw it coming.

Socializing with other people. This is another one of those things that hurts my heart when I hear people say that they don’t like being around people. I hate to break it to them, but they are people too.

Riding Trains (some people think that traveling by train is a waste of time because they need to get to their destinations fast, fast, fast while completely disregarding that getting to their destination is half of the fun of traveling. Getting to travel at all is a privlege, not a given for most people. A lot of people that get to travel are the folks that least deserve the joy of travel.

People

Oprah (they say she’s too rich and too boring) yet she has a lot of really good practical advice for average people, she donates sh*t piles of money to charity, and she uses her celebrity to speak out for the disenfranchised.

Ellen (they say that because she is a gay woman or a Lesbian, that she doesn’t speak for the majority of women. But she’s down to earth, doesn’t claim that she’s better than anybody else, stands up for the little guy or gal, has really hilarious clean humor, and brings everybody’s favorite guests onto her show, did her time, put herself on the line and lost her successful TV show because of it, but still didn’t pitch a fit or make a huge deal, it makes me crazy to wonder why anyone could not like her. She’s sweet, smart, funny and self effacing.

J.K. Rowling (they say that she has created a multi-million dollar industry based upon witches and warlocks. That is absolutely true, but she has never advocated Satanism or anti-christianity or anything related to that. She’s a pretty good writer, she’s created a whole host of original characters that I expect will be appreciated well into the next century, and she has a great imagination, and she’s been able to get children to enjoy reading. That’s worth a million bucks in my mind.)

Places

Disneyland (fun, nostalgia, photo ops, food)

Palm Springs (food, photo ops, potential celebrity sightings, fantastic mid century architecture, people watching, a fantastic geographical setting, shopping, piano bars, a casino, nifty hotels and motels, and statues of both Sonny Bono and Lucille Ball, plus date shakes)

The Mountains (beautiful evergreens, fresh air, lakes and usually an old timey malt shop, plus camping opportunities and hiking and if you’re lucky, some snow in the winterime)

The Beach (warm weather, un-crowded scenery in the fall and spring, warm weather, the sand beneath your feet, barbecues, the salt scented sea air, seals and pelicans, sea shells to discover, and if you’re really lucky a hot man or woman scantily clad)

The Mall at Christmas time. Ornaments, decorations, carolers, Santa Claus, food samples, the scent of cinnamon, fancy window displays, Christmas music, babies wearing Christmas outfits, Christmas lights. And all of this is FREE.

My Strengths, Interests and Hangups

But to let you know, I’m not your average American woman. I love figure skating and gymnastics, classical music, musical theater, The Monkees, The Nanny, and spending time with my brother looking at architecture. Even though I’m a straight female, my likes and dislikes make me sound like a gay man. I love solitary ventures like reading and writing and doing crafts and art projects, or spending qualitiy one on one time with family members or close friends like hiking or going to museum exhibits, or trying out new restaurants and exploring new recipes both online and in cookbooks, and reading restaurant reviews. I’d rather go grocery shopping or look at model homes than to even think about watching “The Superbowl or The World Series” although I do enjoy looking at the Winter Olympics.

Things that I dislike: almost any type of sports (not limited to baseball, basketball and football, in addition to most other “male dominated” sports like boxing and hockey and car racing) and since I’m a vegetarian, I don’t like and can’t indulge in any type of meat, fish or fowl (although I can appreciate the memory of the flavors of barbecue, fajitas and Thanksgiving turkey). I also don’t like computers, Facebook, cellphones, video games, texting, tatoos, Family Guy, Will Ferrell, Matt Damon, Ben Stiller, Tom Cruise and parents who can’t or won’t lovingly discipline their children or teach them manners, txtspk, people who use the word “like” too often or in the wrong context, slasher movies, most reality shows (with the exception of cooking shows) violent shoot ‘em up movies, rap/speed metal/industrial/harsh screetchy fusion jazz or any female singers that sound even remotely similar to Bjork/Laurie Anderson/Alanis Morrisette/Tori Amos and eggplant.

So now you know where I’m coming from.

Animals, chocolate, ice cream, pizza, heels, corsets, dancing, rain, scary movies, books, dirty jokes. All I can think of right now.

ucme's avatar

Sport, Christmas & dwarf throwing. The “holy trinity” for fun lovers everywhere excluding sex, obviously.

I don’t get it when people say they don’t enjoy travel. It’s not even the hassles that get them down, they’re just not keen on visiting a foreign country. No sense of adventure, whatsoever.

augustlan's avatar

Vanilla and reading.

zensky's avatar

Fruit. I would also say vegetables but I can understand how some people dislike some vegetables. But when someone says they don’t like apples or oranges, I am surprised. Then pleased; more for me.

And Kardamom, your brief posts with no thought behind them whatsoever are becoming annoying.

Mariah's avatar

Oh yeah, and cats. And the Beatles.

tom_g's avatar

silence
hiking/walking in the woods
trying new foods
time alone

Michael_Huntington's avatar

Pita bread, Carl Sagan and really cool professors (the ones that are not “easy A’s”, but the ones who actually give a shit about your education)

linguaphile's avatar

I don’t understand kids that groan at dressing up for Halloween.

bookish1's avatar

Fruit, onions, peppers, and mushrooms.

It blows my mind whenever I remember that there are people who are absolutely indifferent to music and could go the rest of their lives without ever wanting to hear a particular song.

Your questions sounds like you are specifically talking about food:

Chocolate
Coconut

But then, I don’t like watermelon, which shocks some people.
