If you have ever been ordered to do something that was supposed to be good for you, what did you get out of it?

Asked by wundayatta (58741points) November 4th, 2011

Sometimes a court orders you to see a therapist. Sometimes a parent orders you to learn this or that “for your own good.” I’m sure there are all kinds of other examples.

What were you ordered to do for your own good? How did you respond to this order? What, positive or negative, did you get out of it?

I was obliged to go to one hell of a lot of church activities growing up. And I’m not talking Sunday School, either; I had to sit still and quiet for 2 hours, three times a week from as young as I can remember. Sleeping was out of the question, too.

The actual content of the services was entirely lost on me, apparently, but I do now have self-discipline and patience in spades. I can easily endure long, boring ordeals that would drive most people nuts.

Thanks, Mom.

I was told by my doctor to stop drinking so heavily, after some results came through :-/
I lost two stone in six weeks :-)
And I can breath again too…….

My doctor ordered me to take medications for various ailments I have. I guess they are keeping me alive, but I’m not sure.

I was told not to get giddy at Christmas parties ever again. I have not since. (I think you know why…wink).

Look it up.

Pretty much anything I asked my parents.

I did. It worked.

@MRSHINYSHOES I think that experience is often a great teacher.

@wundayatta I guess it taught me the lesson that no means no, right?

@MRSHINYSHOES Honest. It’s not for me to decide what your lesson is.

@wundayatta Well, to be honest with you, I think I learned my lesson. It was an eye-opener for me, don’t ya think? :(
