Recommendations for 1TB External Disks?

Asked by anonyjelly16 (747points) May 13th, 2008

I am searching for an external drive with at least 1 TB of space and am considering Seagate’s FreeAgent, Maxtor, WD, and the slightly fancier stuff such as Drobo and Apple’s 1TB Time Capsule.

I am leaning towards the USB/Firewire drives rather than Time Capsule because they are cheaper and my network wont be sluggish every time the Mac decides to do a backup.

Which USB Drive do you recommend? Should I get it at Amazon (as I usually do) or is there a cheaper place to get it?

If you know of a reliable and affordable 2TB Disk, that may be even better. I just want it to be a single enclosure.

Locally, I use the WD MyBook for my G5. My wife’s PowerBook uses the Time Capsule. Happy with both.

Seagate, Maxtor, & WD are the most reliable brands. I would not buy Freeagent, or any other brand. Apple external storage has not been around long enough to establish a reputation. I love Apple but they are assembled in China & I have had a laptop go south when it was overworked. Stick with Maxtor, Seagate, and WD. The rest becomes personal preference. I would definitely opt for Firewire! Some experts say USB2.0 is faster, but I upload my system programs via Firewire and you couldn’t fool me as the speeds are blazing. I use my Apple laptop CD drive only when absolutely necessary as 2 friends reported CDs stuck in the drives (rendering the drive useless).

Um, Apple’s been selling OEM external storage devices since 1989. In any case, they outsource almost everything to Maxtor and Seagate. My personal prefs for external 1TB devices are the Maxtor and Western Digital USB2 devices.

I have a Drobo with 4 500gb drives which gives 1TB of storage (with the other TB used for redundancy). The unit gets a bit loud fan-wise with four drives in it but I must say I’ve had pretty much no problems with it. The best thing about this device is that one or two drives can fail and, as long as you replace them with an equal or larger capacity drive, you don’t lose any data. I do my Time Machine backups to this drive but I also store pretty much everything else on it that I don’t want to lose (which is basically everything).

Also, Lacie has highly reliable external storage, Don’t buy any External with biometric fingerprint locking access. The technology is not reliable enough yet. The security on the Maxtor One Touch is good, just disable the lock prior to wiping your computer’s drive. I’ve had biometric external drives (from Lacie) where the drive was not recognized when locked after wiping my computer drive. All data was lost. Lucky I had redundant external off-site storage. FireWire-only devices are slightly more secure as not all comps have FireWire. Unfortunately, the Maxtor OneTouch doesn’t have the TB capacity you’re looking at.

I have 3 Lacie external HDs, and never had a problem. I highly recommend Lacie

I’ve got 2 redundant external Lacies and my FireWire CD drive that I use in place of my (scary) Apple laptop internal CD drive is phenomenal. Lacie is solidly built, quiet, and rugged.

I’d tend to avoid the maxtor and any of the really cheap lacie hdd’s. I’ve heard really good things about samsung and hitachi HDD’s, so you should look to see who manufactures the disk in your external drive.

I think I am going to have to go with the 2TB MyBook.

Thanks to everyone for their help!
