If I purchase a program online, such as a specific NOVA program, after I get the CD can I then download the CD to start a personal computer library.

Asked by Dutchess_III (47069points) November 4th, 2011

I had to write my work goals for the next year. I watch NOVA and Nature and shows like that every chance I get. So many of them are relevant to my teaching , and I’d like to begin incorporating programs like that into my lessons, if possible. My class room is EXTREMELY limited in space so I don’t have a lot of room to store a library of CD’s. I could store them offsite but…what a hassle.

If my company purchases those programs on my behalf, can I start an internal computer library of those programs?

I assume so but…figured I’d best check.

This would be under fair use, so it should be acceptable for the most part. PBS shows have even more of a liberal license for teachers to use in classrooms, so it’s unlikely that you’ll ever run into legal trouble for it.

However, IANAL and it couldn’t hurt to call the PBS station to double check the licensing for NOVA if you’re worried about legal issues.

Thanks @sinscriven. I’m wondering if you can even purchase the programs in electronic form. U anal, huh!

It does sound like fair use as it is for educational purpose but @sinscriven it might be best to check. You might have a problem copying the DVD to your computer if it has some kind of copy-protection software on it. You might look on Amazon. If the episodes you want are available there streaming, you can purchase them and download them directly to your computer.
