My premature nephew has come down with "a bit of pneumonia", how's his odd's now?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) November 14th, 2011

My 2 pound going on three week old nephew was doing pretty well, but he’s developed a complication. I knew the lungs were a weak point. Any thoughts?

Prayers, good thoughts, green light, whatever will be accepted going his way. I can’t be more informative or helpful that that. Oh, and my fingers are crossed, too.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Any good thoughts gladly accepted. Thank you ever so much. :)

I’m with @JilltheTooth. I don’t know much about preemies, but my thoughts are with you, your family, and the newest member of your family.

Would you mind telling us how premature he was? I think that’s a significant piece of information for people that know enough to answer your question.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@bobbinhood Thanks for your thoughts. He was a little over 30 weeks.

bobbinhood's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe I sent the question to @Rarebear, so hopefully he will be able to stop by and give an informed response.

I have a girlfriend who is a charge nurse at a NICU. I’ll ask her.

JLeslie's avatar

2 pounds sounds very very young. What week was the baby when born?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@JLeslie He was a twin, the sister didn’t make it, so the mother went into labor early. He was 1 pound 15 ounces at birth (C- section to reduce stress).

Coloma's avatar

Bless his little heart. I am sure the doctors are very capable and hopefully they have a handle on the situation.

Hang in there.

My great grandma was born a 7th month preemie and weighed 2 lbs. They wrapped her in cotton and she lived in a cigar box for the early weeks of her life. She lived til 98!

This was in 1885 in a farmhouse with no medical advances at hand.

Keep us informed and fingers crossed for you and yours.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Coloma Thanks, He’s in a good facility. A little better than a cigar box. Thanks for the smile you gave me.

It’s very common. A couple of antibiotics for a week or week and a half and he’ll be much better.

It looks like he was small for his gestational age. He may have a few extra bumps in the road, but I’m sure the medical team is doing all they can to keep him healthy.

JLeslie's avatar

@Cupcake What was the gestational age? I don’t see that info.

JLeslie's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Do you want the real deal reply my girlfriend wrote me? It’s not all negative, don’t worry, but it is not cleaned up for hurt feelings or PC necessarily.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@JLeslie Go ahead. I’m not into PC.

Sounds like he was very early. Pneumonia is not uncommon especially since he has probably been on the vent d/t age and size. The will pit the baby on IV antibiotics and possibly do respiratory treatments depending on the condition of the lungs. Being as early as it sounds like he was ie 900 gms after 3 weeks of life and being a male (especially if it’s white) predisposes him to life ling chronic lung probs, so pneumonia may be a common reoccurrence for him. As for “chances”, I would really need to know what kind of vent he was on, what his bloods gasses were, if he was also septic blood wise or not. There are just so many variables. Sounds like he was around 26 wks when he was born, maybe a little older. These baby’s can do great, or they can spiral down… A 26 weeker, male, in general? 60–70% go home, maybe? But does he want to know if the baby will breathe and have a heart beat, or if he will still be in diapers at 12 yrs old, with coke bottle glasses and “special classes” at his school? I believe you and I have discussed this before..we send a lot of babies home, but their quality of life is not always very good. The “do everything, do everything!” mentality of many families often gains for them waaaaay more than they bargained for. Hopefully for your friend’s nephew it’s a simple pneumonia cleared up w some antibiotics, and onward and upward he goes.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@JLeslie Thanks, that was exactly what I needed to hear. He was gaining previously and he picked his head up, so those are encouraging signs. Thanks for the honest answer.

I’d say your nephew has excellent odds. This is not something new for doctors/nurses these days. The important thing is that they seem to already be treating it. The danger comes when it is not detected in time. You should know within 24–48 hours if the antibiotic treatment succeeded.

Edit: Well… @JLeslie seems to have covered this much more thoroughly already. =)

I don’t have any useful info to add, just sending positive thoughts your way. I know how important this is to you, and I hope you won’t worry yourself sick. From the sounds of it, things will be a-ok. Hugs.

Please keep us informed. I am sorry for the loss of the twin. Being a parent of twins who were premature and ended up in the hospital with RSV, I can tell you the lung medications they have now saved our girls lives. They are incredible.

He may have residual asthma, as one of my girls did. THIS IS NOT AS BAD AS IT SOUNDS! She had a home nebulizer and got daily breathing treatments till she was 5 and then SHE OUTGREW it with no lung scarring thanks to the medicine!

I am telling you- any other time in the past my girls would not be around, but because of advancements in medicine they are 100% healthy and normal at 9 years old.

Have hope! I will drop some prayers for insurance! Please keep us up to date!

There is a huge difference between 26 weeks and 29–30. Even though he was small, his gestational age was much more suitable to recovery than if he was 26 weeks. Also, a diagnosis of pneumonia suggests that he does not have sepsis, which is an infection of the blood.

bobbinhood's avatar

@JLeslie The gestational age was 30 weeks

@Adirondackwannabe, I’m so sorry for the loss of the baby girl! It sounds like the baby boy is a fighter! What is his name? Let’s personalize for prayer’s sake. :-)

EmptyNest's avatar

OH, by the way, my grandson, Chance was born at 33 weeks and he’s a completely healthy seven-year-old who plays football! ;-)

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Thanks, I’ll PM you.

JLeslie's avatar

My husband was born at 32/33 weeks (always has been stated to me as 7th month) and is perfectly healthy also. But he was 2 kilos. There is a big difference with each week at that stage. My husband’s first days were precarious and then he thrived.

JLeslie's avatar

How’s the baby?

Dog's avatar

^Please update.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Thanks guys for all your support. Unfortunately I don’t have an update. We’re getting nothing back from the family. They’re a couple of states away and we’ve left multiple messages but haven’t heard anything at all. Doesn’t leave me with a very good feeling. As soon as I hear anything I’ll let you guys know.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Take the silence as good news, they’re probably too busy and overwhelmed right now. If the news was bad, they probably would notify the family. Fingers staying crossed, here.

Dog's avatar

Just remember- bad news travels fast. I believe the silence is good.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

We received a thank you note from his mom yesterday for his shower gifts. It was dated the 15th of November and said he has a long road ahead of him, but he’s a fighter. Made me feel a little better.

JilltheTooth's avatar

So glad you heard! That sounds promising. Difficult, but promising…

Dog's avatar

:D GO GO GO BABY! Every day it will get better!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Dude’s off the ventilator. Pushing towards 4 weeks. Cool.

bobbinhood's avatar

Sweet! Thanks for letting us know. :)

Congratulations! So glad to hear everything is good!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Lungs are clearing. He hit two pounds eight ounces and all the tubes are out. No word on cognitive skills, but he’s still less than a 9 month old.

Coloma's avatar

Go baby go! :-)

Dog's avatar

Whooo hoooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

JLeslie's avatar

Any new news?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

He’s hanging in there. Breastfeeding a little. He was on the feeding tube all day but now they can take him off it parttime.

JilltheTooth's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe : Yahoo! Any progress at this point is good progress. i know there’s still a long road, but his parents are probably very encouraged… a nice gift for the season!
