A week ago, my driver’s license was lost, stolen or both. (I lost it. Someone stole it instead of turning it in.) I just discovered this. What can I do to prevent identity theft? I’m not in a panic yet, but I’m heading there.

Have you informed the authorities of this? Your insurance firm, police etc?
You might want to read this and this.
Certainly contact the DMV, at the very least, and ask them what procedures they recommend, your local police can probably provide some insight too.
I didn’t think someone could steal your identity just with a drivers license…..how would that work? I honestly would be bummed and annoyed but not concerned at all. Then again I tend to under-exaggerate the importance of things/situations. But….maybe I’m wrong, too?
I had my wallet stolen and it had my drivers license, social securtity, and bank card. I called all my cards and the credit bureaus to report them stolen. I reported my DL stolen and my bank card and I also called social securtiy and informed them. I got idenity theft. When I spoke to the bank they informed me of a one time use at a gas station that day. They had changed my number and sent me a new card. The same with all the other credit cards. The credit bureaus helped block my account. Whenever I need to open a new account they have to call my phone number and or email us about getting approval for the the new account. This way I know when or if someone tries to open an account under my name and social.
Actually my husband set it up. Its some sort of fraud alert status you can put on your account if someone tries to use it.
You need to notify the Department of Licensing immediately.
I had the same experience as @pandora. All that happened to me was that they tried to use my credit card to get gas. My credit cards were protected with Discovercard’s Wallet Protection and my license was taken care of with a call to the local police. It really wasn’t a big deal, but I also jumped to conclusions and assumed that my life was going to be hell for a while. It wasn’t. It really was no big deal.
Thank you all. I have taken care of it. I really appreciate your advice.
Drive slowly and obey the traffic laws until your replacement arrives.
@rojo I have a temporary until the replacement comes and rarely disobey traffic laws anyhow, but thanks for the reminder!
