In an effort to be objective and bipartisan. What are some great things about American republicans (or people that lean to the right)?

Asked by Blackberry (34189points) November 17th, 2011

Yeah, I’ll admit it, I’m not too hot about American conservatives right now. But I have the common sense to know not all of them are wacky, just like I know all people that lean to the left aren’t rational.

Who are the normal, rational republicans or conservatives?

Jon Huntsman strikes me as a decent enough guy.

Ron Paul is against FISA, the Patriot Act, Military Commissions Act, Real ID, bank bailouts, corporate welfare/personhood, a surveillance state, torture, the six wars we are currently in, the war on drugs, our monetary policy, votes strictly with the constitution, and has been predicting the mess we are now in since the 70s.
Unfortunately, most people base what they know of him from how the corporate media has portrayed him, and have not read any of his books or listened to his speeches.
Why would the corporate media portray anyone in a positive light if they are against corporate personhood?

If you would like to get a good understanding of his philosophy, I highly recommend reading The Revolution:A Manifesto.

Party moderates like Olympia Snow (named a Top 10 US Senator in 2006) and Susan Collins represent what the Republicans used to be like.

They seem to have a backdrop of unflinchable values whether they are successful at living them out or not. Values such as work ethic, consideration for future generations, and earth care.

@smilingheart1 Earth care? Who?

They seem to be more disciplined about pretty much everything. Not a bad thing if getting somewhere in this life is important.

They are not against social concerns they just want fiscal responsibility, and think that social concerns should be taken care of by any one but a government. It leads to, to much power.

Business is a double edge sword, essential and neglectful, greedy and philanthropic. Business can always be challenged and new business can emerge and eliminate old ineffective processes, but government has removed the ability to challenge it from it’s people and by it’s very nature is inefficient and self propagating.

Please do not misunderstand, there is a need and a value to government. Every one is to blame, because businesses are run by people who are greedy for money and power and governments are run by people who are greedy for power and self preservation.

@Kato Social concerns should be taken care of by anyone but the government? I guess you mean social programs like welfare, social security, education, and medicare? What prosperous, industrious, reasonably safe nation has a government that does not have social systems? It seems to me countries that don’t provide systems are probably not countries most Americans would want to live in if they had to find a new country. And, if by social you mean gay marriage, a woman’s right to have control over her body, gay people in the military, the Republican government generally wants to be all inside of hour lives and controlling those things. Maybe you are thinking Libertarians? Or, what Republicans used to be.

Republicans did not care at all about the deficit during Bush. In fact, during Reagan I hated watching the deficit go up and up and up, and the Republicans touted him, still do, as having great economics, call it reaganomics, theory. They argued at the time having debt is a ok.

Clinton fought to balance the budget and did. Some say he had a Republican congress who helped him do. Ok, I’ll give them a little credit. But, the average republican on the street doesn’t give a damn about the deficit unless there is a Democrat in the executive office. At least not in the last 25+ years. Republicans do not want to pay thhe debt they created. Bush going to war cost a fortune. Sure Obama has cost us money too, I am not happy about it, but most Democrats I know want to pay the bill.

Or, maybe you have an example of what you mean, and I have missed the mark totally.
