(NSFW) Discharge from boobs?

Asked by MilkyWay (13911points) November 20th, 2011

Is white discharge ( not breast milk ) only possible when you’re pregnant? Or is it possible whenever? Is it normal?

According to Mayo Clinic, “Nipple discharge in a woman who’s not pregnant or breast-feeding isn’t necessarily abnormal, but should be evaluated by a doctor.” They also say, “Take care to avoid nipple stimulation — including frequent checks for discharge — because stimulation actually makes the discharge persist.”

Women to Women has a pretty comprehensive article on nipple discharge written by a doctor who specializes in breasts. They also have a chart detailing various causes of nipple discharge.

WebMD’s article is a bit easier to read. They say, “While nipple discharge can be serious, in most cases, it’s either normal or due to a minor condition.” So, while they encourage you to see a doctor about it, they say it’s not worth panicking.

All that to say, nipple discharge is possible whenever and is fairly normal, but it’s advisable to get it checked out just in case there is an underlying problem.

You need to be checked for a pituitary problem. It is not usually normal outside of pregnancy and breast feeding.
