Would you care to add your country's abbreviations to a fluther glossary?

Asked by harple (10455points) November 23rd, 2011

Inspired by this question a few weeks back, by rebbel…

I’m thinking particularly of abbreviations that you would use on fluther, rather than generic txt speak. I guess I am thinking of longer-standing acronyms, such as MIA, meaning missing in action. Are there any that may be specific to your country?

In the UK, some we have are:
NHS – National Health Service
GMT – Greenwich Mean Time
M&S – Marks and Spencer (a nationwide, upmarket(ish) chainstore)
DVLA – Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency
UCAS – the University and Colleges Admission Service (exams taken aged 16–18 are assigned a point value, and universities can request a certain number of points to gain admission)

We have tons. I live in Canada and had to deal with ICBC (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia), the CRA (Canadian Revenue Agency), MVB (Motor Vehicle Branch). I’ve lived in BC (British Columbia) and AB (Alberta). My grandfather fought with the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force).

Just off the top of my head.

USAF (and USMC, USN, etc.) – United States Air Force (Marine Corps, Navy, etc.)
S&P – Standard and Poor (stock index)

Good initiative @harple!

BS No, not bullshit. It’s Québec French for bien-être social which means welfare. We usually say something is BS, when we find something cheap, unimpressive or of low quality, based on how shitty being on welfare is, or how some people think welfare recipients suck.

It’s kind of funny that, unintentionally, it’s extremely close to what people use ’‘bullshit’’ for.

There are just too many to list for the United States (US). Even among Americans many of them don’t know some of the abreviations. People who live near DC (the country’s capital) use so many acronyms, especially for all the agencies of the federal government:

NIH national institutes of health
NCI national cancer Institute
FDA food and drug administration
NIST national institute of science and technology
NIMH national institute of mental health
HHS health and human services
FBI federal bureau of investigations
CIA central intelligence agency
There are more…

Then we have the time zones:
CT, CST, CDT Central Time, Central Standard Time, Central Daylight Savings Time
ET, EST, EDT Eastern Time, etc.
MT, MST, MDT mountain time, etc.
PC, PST, PDT, pacific time, etc.
I think of GMT as being international, since all time zones are usually an addition or subtraction from GMT time.

Abreviations for all 50 states plus DC. Do you really want me to list them all?

United States is US or USA.

One of my mom’s favorites is FF as in who gives a flying fu$&.

Probably we should all write out the full name or word intially in an answer, and then can switch to abbreviations later in the paragraph.

Oh, I can do Norway:

NAV – National arbeids og velferdsetaten (it’s our unemployment office, and oh, so much more)
EØS – europeiske økonomiske samarbeidsområde (european economic cooperation group)
UDI – Utlendingsdirektoratet (it’s where residency and asylum seekers and people seeking citizenship and work permits go to wait in long lines and fill in long forms only to be told they have done it wrong and redo it and wait at the back of the line again.)
UFFA – this one deserves a link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFFA (Sadly, the house burnt down last winter but the group is still active.)

that will do…for now.
