Social Question

If you want to be a Christian but aren't socially, mentally, or physically someone to emulate, how do you go about this?

Asked by ofio (22points) November 27th, 2011

I get the feeling that I don’t belong in church, or around most people, so because of my social incapacity from my childhood, I don’t feel that I should tell people that I want to be a Christian. However, I was literally going paralyzed for over a year when a woman told me that “all she could do was pray for me” and it got better… so I really, really, want to do something in return but obviously I’m too screwed up from my childhood and am a total failure so what do I do?

Well, for me I got a New Translation Bible. I read it from time to time. I’d probably start out with reading the New Testament and then reading the Old Testament. For me I have my own personal realtionship with Jesus Christ, but I also keep an open mind about what others believe. Because how can I learn the most about my God, if I don’t learn about other peoples God as well? It’s just that simple. I pray to the lord, tell the lord how thankful I am, and how blessed I am, and work hard at life everyday, trying to do positive things and helping others. It’s not so much about showing up in church for me. Practicing good works and “walking amongst the weeds” is what I’ll do to get to heaven. Church might be for you however, try going to different ones. Baptists church’s are usually more relaxed and fun. Not so much serious tone. Pentacostals believe that women should wear skirts. Catholics believe you should pray to saints in order to speak with God. And I could go on and on, but its just a matter of following your heart. Even small little group fellowships count as gathering for the lord. You can do them online.

Well, yes, a lot of the time religion is for others’ sake but to a point. Sometimes, it’s also about you and what you want to feel and no one can tell you you can’t be a Christian. Even when you do it all ‘perfectly’, there are people who will tell you are not a real Christian. Remember how dumb that sounds, never do that to anyone else and hope you find answers.

I can’t tell you how to become a Christian but I do think the first thing you should do is to stop telling yourself that you’re awful and there’s no hope you can change.

Being a Christian has nothing to do with going to church.

@ofio, there is absolutely no one on the planet that Jesus Christ does not want in His forever kingdom. And your desires speak of God’s wooing you. Jesus wants you to invite Him in your heart, he’s a gentleman and waits to be asked. There are official prayers of salvation you can look up on the internet if you wanted to, but why not just begin talking to Him and telling Him that you are ready for relationship and you are inviting Him in to lead, you guide, you take you through this life with your own special relationship with Him. You will over time begin to sense an all loving presence right on the inside of you. Read and study about who the new you now is: translated into the kingdom of God and His Christ (this means anointed one).

Sounds like you’re the target demographic:

“He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.”

Isn’t all that religion bullshit about who you are, waht yould your body have to do with it?

XOIIO's avatar

@Dutchess_III well I thought its all about “spirit of mind” or whatever it is.

Dutchess_III's avatar

It is @XOIIO. And if you are true to a belief, and guard against being a hypocrite, your body will follow.

Still, the use of the word physically doesn’t make much sense in this.

I see what you’re saying…no. There is no physicality that pre-disposes one to Christianity, or any other belief for that matter!

The same way that you would go about joining any other religion or group, by learning more about it. Read Christian scriptures and works by Christian thinkers. If you feel it’s important to socialize with other Christians, then just try different churches until you find one that fits. But you don’t necessarily have to join a church to be a Christian. There are plenty of Christians who follow Biblical teachings but don’t feel the need to participate in organized religion.
