If you didn't speak English, what language would you be speaking?

This is a good question for native speakers.

Gibberish, I guess. Do you mean if I could choose another language? Italian.
Or do you mean because of my heritage? German, Polish, Norwegian. You might want to clarify what you are looking for.

@Sunny2 LOL! I was wondering the same thing. Heritage-wise, German. Preference? Spanish.

What ever my parents taught me.

Brian1946's avatar

Genealogically, I’d be speaking German.

Preferentially, I’d be speaking Spanish.

everephebe's avatar

I’d speak American.

mazingerz88's avatar

Klingon and Romulan. : )

I’d be speaking whatever melting-pot creole that formed from the languages of all the many immigrants (and natives) that form the population of the United States. Whenever you have people from many languages coming together with no standard language to use between them, one will form as a matter of course, because people need to get things done like commerce and hooking up. ;)

flutherother's avatar

Gaelic maybe.

muppetish's avatar

Probably Spanish, but I would prefer to have originated speaking something else. Maybe French or German—something a bit closer to English in terms of vocabulary and structure.

Le francais.

Cymraeg :-) Dwi’n gallu siarad Gymraeg yn barod… Ond mae’n dal fy ail iaith. (Though I have just had a real chuckle seeing what an online translator makes of what I’ve just written! I can assure you it’s nothing to do with heartburn!)

wundayatta's avatar

I’d speak Ambition.

DominicX's avatar

I guess Русский since my mom speaks it, my dad understands it, and heritage-wise I’m ¾ Russian.

KateTheGreat's avatar

Well, Russian is my native language. So I suppose I’d speak that if I wasn’t speaking English.

Brian1946's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir @KateTheGreat @DominicX

Is the first person pronoun in Russian capitalized?

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@Brian1946 not always..it depends…i think when you’re writing informally, you don’t have to capitalize it…when you’re writing formally, all pronouns are capitalized…

Berserker's avatar

French, I guess. It’s me native language.

私は日本語を話す I would speak Japanese, because I was born on a military base in Japan.

Either Japanese or Chinese, or possibly both. I learned both at home at a young age, but English is my main tongue.

My brain hurts after looking at all of that.

Maybe Norwegian, due to family background (or Italian?)
If I had to choose, probably Welsh or French.

@everephebe What in the seven hells, man? O_O

@Michael_Huntington, @everephebe , tell the class how you did that wonderful trick.

lonelydragon's avatar

Geologically, I would probably speak Gaelic or continue speaking English.
Preferentially, I would speak French.

I copy and paste like a pro.

I copy and paste like a BROOOOOOOO

Lmao at the last two posts.

True story; it took me about two weeks to learn how to copy and paste text.
