Right product to use to seal a leaky concrete water feature?

Asked by YoBob (12846points) November 28th, 2011

I have a waterfall feature on a backyard swimming pool. The feature is made of concrete (textured to look like natural rock) and sports two approximately bathtub sized basins. The lower basin has developed a pretty hefty leak that I am unable to pinpoint. I know it is on the bottom somewhere because all of the water leaks out in approximately 5 hours if I let it sit.

I have tried a couple of different paint on applications, one that was latex based and billed itself to be for “wet wall” applications and would stand up to hydrostatic pressure. The other was “plastidip”, which is a spray on rubber like coating. Neither has done the trick.

So… any of you jellies out there know of a product that would do the trick?

You really need a pro to replace some gunnite and patch the plaster if you want it done right. My guess is that it will be between $200—$500 depending on how big the crack is.

I guess I didn’t fully explain. The leak is not in the pool itself, but in a part of the waterfall, which is made of concrete.

I think @Judi is correct in that in the end this might call for a pro. However, I am still hoping that there is a DIY product out there that is designed for just such an application.

A paint on epoxy, perhaps?

For standing water you’re going to have a tough time I’m afraid. Unless you feel confidant in your concrete skills.

I have used this with good luck in the past:
Hydraulic Water-Stop Cement
